WILPF Italy challenges US nukes & bases in their nation

In 2022, 22 associations in Italy commissioned a study from IALANA Italia on the legality of the presence of U.S. nuclear bombs at the military bases in Ghedi (Brescia) and Aviano (Pordenone). Based on the study, we filed a complaint regarding the illegal possession and transfer of nuclear bombs on October 2, 2024, with the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office, but it was dismissed after only 9 days.

We did not give up and filed two new complaints on October 2, 2025, with the Public Prosecutor’s Offices in Brescia and Pordenone. The first signatories are four women from WILPF. The first complaint was dismissed, but the second was not, and the judge has scheduled a hearing for June 15, 2026, in Pordenone.

We are organizing events for the weeks leading up to that date. There will definitely be a protest on June 6 in front of the Aviano military base, and we will organize a conference in the city of Pordenone.

We’ll keep you updated in case anyone wants to “pop over” to Italy in solidarity or if we manage to have one of you participate remotely during the conference.

Trump’s threat to withdraw U.S. troops from Europe and Italy would be a relief to us. This is not out of hostility, but out of respect for our sovereignty and our Constitution, which states in Article 11:

“Italy repudiates war as an instrument of aggression against the freedom of other peoples and as a means of resolving international disputes; it consents, on terms of equality with other States, to the limitations on sovereignty necessary for an order that ensures peace and justice among nations, and promotes and encourages international organizations dedicated to this purpose.”

Best wishes to everyone for your continued success.
