Thousands rally against Japan's constitutional revision amid military build-up

Tens of thousands of people took to streets of Tokyo for a peace rally last Sunday, protesting against Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi government’s policies on constitutional revision (repealing pacifist Article 9) and military expansion.

The rally coincided with Japan’s Constitution Memorial Day.

Sunday also marked the 80th anniversary of the opening of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, also known as the Tokyo Trials, on May 3, 1946.

Japan has significantly accelerated its shift away from postwar pacifism, marking a major turning point in its military and constitutional policy.

Under Prime Minister Takaichi, the government has dismantled decades-old restrictions on arms exports and is moving toward formal constitutional reform.
