A Peaceful Space Environment for All

By John Barentine

Outer space is changing rapidly, especially the space near Earth. Private actors now dominate the human technological presence in space due to reusable space launch technologies. These technologies forced down the cost of launch, which in turn facilitated a rapid increase in the number of satellites in orbit.

This new era began in the past decade, and these commercial activities, currently driven primarily by thousands of satellites serving broadband internet to customers on the ground, are growing by leaps and bounds. The Space Foundation estimates that the value of the global space economy could exceed one trillion U.S. dollars by 2032.

The Center for Space Environmentalism is a group of scientists and advocates who hold that outer space has become a distinctly human environment, and that alongside the terrestrial environment, it is worthy of our respect, consideration, and long-term stewardship. We established this new organisation in 2025 to inspire, inform, and guide the preservation and protection of the space environment. We envision a future in which humanity's interaction with the natural world beyond the Earth’s atmosphere is minimally intrusive and informed by rigorous assessment and research, preserving the pristine nature of space not only for enjoyment, science, and inspiration for current and future generations, but also for its own sake and sovereignty.

The “New Space Race” brings the prospect of significant and potentially irreversible changes to the space environment. Space warfare represents one of the most worrisome threats. Various world powers have already announced plans to ramp up spending on military activities in space they insist are either defensive in nature or “passive”, such as orbital surveillance of rivals’ space assets. The proposed U.S. Golden Dome missile defence program echoes Cold War initiatives such as the Strategic Defence Initiative, known in the 1980s by its popular moniker ‘Star Wars’. That built on an earlier Cold War history that saw, among other actions, the testing of nuclear weapons in space.

Although the signing of the Outer Space Treaty (OST) in 1967 somewhat dampened aggressive posturing in space, it did not prohibit the militarisation of space outright. The OST states that “the establishment of military bases, installations and fortifications, the testing of any type of weapons and the conduct of military manoeuvrers on celestial bodies shall be forbidden.” But it goes on to say that “the use of military personnel for scientific research or for any other peaceful purposes shall not be prohibited.”

In 2019, the U.S. Space Force was introduced as a new branch of the U.S. military with plans to build bases and deploy troops in space. It appears that so long as weapons testing and base building do not happen “on celestial bodies,” and a military presence there exists for “peaceful purposes,” space militarisation — at least in orbit and on transiting spacecraft — is permitted.

Now, as the space domain shifts from publicly funded dominance by nation states to private commercial interests, those private actors are eager to become defence contractors. For example, the same technology developed by the American company SpaceX for its Starlink communication satellites is finding new military applications in the form of “Starshield”. The company describes the product as “a secured satellite network for government use, leveraging Starlink for national security.”

Some of the company’s former employees have moved on to found space weapons companies using the same disruptive approach SpaceX took to “Old Space”. SpaceX has also secured contracts to launch the majority of the U.S. Space Force’s national security missions in the fiscal year 2026. Meanwhile, reckless and destructive antisatellite weapons tests have generated considerable new space debris fields.

States and their military contractors are already setting their sights on more distant worlds. With countries like the U.S. and China determined to return to the Moon in this decade, the prospect of competition for lunar resources and resulting territorial disputes looms large. Billionaire space entrepreneurs who fancy themselves as the saviours of humanity envision a human presence on Mars by mid-century. Their outlook is at turns both lawless and libertarian, jettisoning a world they see as beset by unfair rules and needless regulations for one in which literally “anything goes”. The rush to extract the resources of the Moon, Mars, and worlds beyond may well ignite terrestrial disputes and even warfare with real and deadly consequences.

Humanity is rapidly approaching a turning point where decisions about the space environment made today may affect people living centuries from now. We seek a safe and sustainable space environment for all people of all nations and for its own sake. Yet the existing international governance framework established by the OST fails to recognise that some actions are inherently detrimental to the space environment and Earth-space continuum and should not be undertaken in order to preserve that environment.

As states increasingly view outer space as the ultimate high ground — the literal “Final Frontier” — opportunities to participate in decision-making are narrowing for the public while widening for defence and commercial stakeholders. Our organisation therefore aims in part to increase both awareness of the high stakes we collectively face in space governance as well as the consequences of inaction.

We call on people, governments and private actors everywhere to take the following actions, among others:

  • Extend the protections and considerations of existing terrestrial environmental law to the space environment;
  • Prohibit destructive antisatellite weapon testing in space by international treaty with meaningful enforcement provisions; and
  • Intentionally solicit and incorporate the views of the public in the rulemaking and legislative processes concerning space activities from the beginning, particularly from traditionally underrepresented and/or marginalised groups.

We believe in the promise of the Outer Space Treaty that the exploration and ‘use’ of outer space should be peaceful. Yet we also recognise the inherent limitations of the worldview expressed in the Treaty in that it does not go far enough to meaningfully prevent bellicose actions in space. It is our intention to campaign against dangerous and aggressive acts in space that threaten international peace and security as well as the integrity of the space environment. Working with like-minded others, such as the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, we are oriented toward the goal of truly keeping space for peace – for people and environment alike.

Corporate control of our food

Are restaurants starting to taste the same?

Food distributor Sysco has been on a relentless acquisition spree, becoming one of the largest companies in food service.

This consolidation means higher prices for mass-produced food made under grueling conditions.

----------------------------------------------------------------

There are many ways to reduce the life expectancy of the current 'superfluous populations' around the globe.

Thus the corporate oligarchs have come to understand that they can make big bucks by dominating the food market. The upside for the ruling elite is that these low quality food products will ensure the human population declines much more rapidly.

The answer?

Start your own garden - plant your front and back yards. Get the entire neighborhood to do the same.

To hell we send the corporations.

Arrested at DC Israeli embassy

My dear friend Kathy Boylan from the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker House in Washington DC tells her story about a phony arrest for standing outside the Israeli embassy with her homemade sign opposing genocide.

Kathy is a long-time activist who helps care for the homeless and refugee families. She has vigiled outside the Pentagon weekly for many years calling for peace as the military and civilian workers enter the home of the US war machine. She's been arrested there and other sites around the capital quite often.

Kathy is an inspiration to many. She is strong, forceful and faithful.

Notice the Global Network 'Free the Sky' t-shirt she is wearing.

Kathy is a legend. She is a good example how a one-person protest can spread around the world. In South Korea a one-person protest is held in very high regard.

Sabby Sabs on growing Israeli control of Washington

Sabby Sabs joins Tucker Carlson to take on the IDF which now marches directly into the Pentagon and dictates what they must do to support 'Greater Israel'.

It's wild times in Washington - and most Americans are paying for it - in one way or the other.

Sabby also features Jeffrey Sachs talking about Israel's 'reckless extremism and militarism and all its wars'.

She ties lots of odds and ends together which she is so good at doing. Religion, population control, colonialism, endless war, resource control, and more.

Sabby concludes that if Zionist control was not based in Tel Aviv it would be HQed somewhere else in the region.

Listen and learn.

Attending New England Peace Pagoda 40th Anniversary Ceremony

Speaking about our work and Keep Space for Peace Week

Over 200 people from many places attended this moving day of celebration of peace with true justice

On Saturday morning MB and I drove south to Ipswich, Massachusetts where the House of Peace, run for many years by dear friends Carrie and John Schuchardt, is located.

After lunch John and I made our way through very busy traffic to the Boston airport to pick up renowned peace activist Kathy Kelly who flew in from Chicago to join us for our Sunday trip to Leverett to attend the 40th Anniversary Celebration of the First Peace Pagoda on Turtle Island.

Along the two hour drive to Leverett John regaled us with the deep history of the region. Everything from the American Lexington-Concord revolution story that replaced rule by the British with the American oligarchs who were exterminating the native people and amassing legions of slaves from Africa as free labor for the new colonizers.

Even the military bases and prisons we passed drew sharp memories from John as we drove west along the colorful 'Mohawk Trail'.

John was involved from the outset with the creation of the New England Peace Pagoda. But first Nipponzan-Myōhōji Buddhist Elder Monk Gyoway Kato befriended Slow Turtle, Supreme Medicine Man of the Wampanoag Nation to get permission to even consider building the Peace Pagoda on native land.

Slow Turtle, who also eventually helped build the Pagoda, said at the 1985 inaugural ceremony, "It is probably the first time we felt really good about people coming here to our land [and asking our permission] for a good purpose. We've been honored by the Buddhist monks who have come amongst us and told us of their ways and their thoughts, and wondered if we felt the same and thought the same about peace throughout the world. And we do."

After Sunday's moving Buddhist ceremony in the unusually intense autumn heat, an incredible Dharma talk was given by Venerable Kato who touched all our hearts with a beautiful and righteous Palestine solidarity message.

Always moving story-teller Kathy Kelly was the keynote speaker and was followed by John Schuchardt and myself.

During my brief words I thanked Nipponzan-Myōhōji for their steadfast peace work  in our country over these many years. Monks and nuns were present from around the US for this event. Many of them led the 10 peace walks I have organized - 5 in Florida and 5 in Maine since 1987.

I described the work of the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space to prevent the arms race from moving into the heavens. To illustrate the point I described Trump's 'Golden Dome' plan to build a 'Star Wars' shield over the US and Canada that would cost at least $20 trillion (according to the Congressional Budget Office). I asked the crowd how the government would pay for it. You can just imagine the responses.

I shared the story about Lakota Medicine man Lame Deer who described how when the white people came to this continent they were blinded by their love for the dollar bill - what he called the 'Green Frog Skin'. As a result Lame Deer said the colonizer's spiritual connection to the Mother Earth was snapped like breaking a twig in half.

I concluded my words by saying that Nipponzan-Myōhōji has long been helping us to heal this broken spiritual connection.

Three portraits were hung next to the ceremonial alter that John Schuchardt had arranged be sent by Maine artist Robert Shetterly. His Americans Who Tell the Truth series now includes almost 300 portraits of activists from across the US. Portraits of James Douglass, Kathy Kelly and Bruce Gagnon were displayed for the audience to see.

John & Carrie (on right) Brother Kato and Kathy in center and Sr. Clare on left. Me in back.

During John Schuchardt's remarks he reported that a new book has just come out authored by Douglass entitled Martyrs to the Unspeakable: The Assassinations of JFK, Malcolm, Martin and RFK. Shetterly always inscribes quotes on the paintings from those he features in this remarkable series. John concluded his words by reading the last words on the Douglass portrait, "Hope comes from our confronting the unspeakable".

Virtually everyone at this spiritual/political event was talking intensely about the perilous times we are now facing. No one knows for certain what might come next or how we can turn our own nation toward sanity, peace and real justice.

What lingers in my mind though are these clear and truthful words by Jim Douglass - "Hope comes from our confronting the unspeakable".

We should all try to make that our mantra in the days ahead.

Digital ID: Mass surveillance & population control

Authoritarian governments. Digital surveillance. The end of free speech. Sounds familiar? The UK is now introducing mandatory Digital IDs for all workers — and it’s happening before the next general election in 2029. What was once called a conspiracy theory is now official government policy.

⚠️ Is this about immigration control, or something much more sinister? Critics argue this could be the foundation of a centralized surveillance system, tracking where you go, who you are, and even what you believe.

📲 What is the UK Digital ID system?

The government plans to require every adult in the UK to verify their right to work using a smartphone-based digital ID — storing your name, photo, DOB, nationality, and residency status. Employers will be legally required to check this against a central database.

If you are found to be 'naughty' they will be able to shut down your bank account, lose access to social media, have travel blocked and much more.

In the US this is coming sooner than we realize.

Speak now against this madness. Is this the future we wish to leave to our future generations?

This should blow your mind....

The Erika Kirk Israeli honey trap rabbit hole gets deeper and more sinister the more you dig…

Erika needs to answer why she and her family have lied so much about their past, including the original reason she moved to Arizona, and the depth of her parents’ involvement with the DoD, DHS, intelligence community and yes…Israel and Trump.

What was 17 year old Erika doing running a child orphanage in Romania where kids were disappearing and Romania kicked Erika out of the country?

Interview with Diana Buttu from West Bank

Very interesting and important real talk here. The interview begins at 18:30 point in the video.

Diana Buttu is a Palestinian-Canadian lawyer, analyst, and writer. She is also the Communications Director in Palestine for the Institute for Middle East Understanding (IMEU).

Previously, she served as a legal advisor to the Palestinian Liberation Organization.

She doesn't hold back.

Wounded Knee was a massacre

Wounded Knee Massacre occurred on December 29, 1890, when U.S. Army troops killed mostly unarmed  surrendering Lakota men, women, and children near Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota.

The Wounded Knee massacre saw soldiers from the Army’s 7th Cavalry kill or injure 350 to 375 Lakota according to federal government estimates.

In the incident, the 7th Cavalry surrounded a group of Lakota led by Chief Big Foot to confiscate firearms after the chief had agreed to surrender them peacefully, according to historians. When a Lakota tribesman declined to give up a weapon, a soldier attempted to grab it, and it fired. After the weapon went off, U.S. soldiers opened fire on the Lakota.

Almost half of those killed were women and children. Some 25 U.S. soldiers also died in the incident, “many likely fallen to friendly fire,” historians report.

In the months after the massacre, the Army awarded 18 Medals of Honor to soldiers in the ranks of private to captain, according to service records. The citations justifying the medals ranged greatly. One included just a single word: “Bravery.” Another went into more detail: “Went to rescue of the commanding officer who had fallen severely wounded, picked him up and carried him out of range of the hostile guns.”

By the end of the nineteenth century, the US government had permanently transformed Native American life across the United States through broken treaties, bison hunting to near-extinction, and reservation containment. Native Americans were also deleteriously affected by government agents, assimilationist educational and religious programs, and military conflict.

At the end of the nineteenth century, tribes across reservations practiced the “Ghost Dance” ritual, which called a new Messiah to bring back ancestors, show new hunting grounds, and remove white settlers from their lands. As ghost dancing spread, it compounded tensions between Native Americans and US government officials.

After the death of Sitting Bull, a Lakota holy man, at the hands of the US military, a band of Lakota fled the Standing Rock Agency and made for the Pine Ridge Agency to seek protection. En route, they were stopped near the Wounded Knee Creek on December 29, 1890, and forcibly disarmed by the Seventh Cavalry, who came with an arsenal of weapons and a thirst for action.

The Lakota People's Law Project writes:

"Many tribal leaders and organizations issued statements condemning the announcement, largely pointing out that the decision is not reflective of real American history — nor our shared values. People are simply asking for a correction in awarding the slaughter of women and children at Wounded Knee. This should not be a complicated issue."

Global protests underway - Free Palestine!

Huge protests throughout the world are on-going

  • While the Italian government abandoned the Gaza flotilla, the Italian working class has not. The national strike has been called for Friday and a national march in Rome on October 4. The Genoa’s Dockworkers’ Union (CALP) vowed it would “block everything” if anything happened to the flotilla.
  • At least 44 countries were represented in the 500-person flotilla.
  • It has been reported that more than 45 boats have left Turkey to replace the illegally captured Flotilla.
  • Thousands on the Old Port of Marseille, France against Macron, his clique, his coups d’état, and his organized looting. It’s just the beginning, we’re coming.
  • Striking French railway workers stormed the Tesla dealership in Paris. Sending a message of resistance to Macron, Musk and their criminal class.
  • Spontaneous demonstration in Brussels, Belgium last night in defense of the Global Sumud Flotilla. After Place Bourse (Stock Exchange Square), the demonstration headed towards the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  •  🇹🇷 Last night, following the israeli raid on the Global Sumud Flotilla, protesters in Adana, Turkey, threw stones at the US Consulate. The US uniparty's ironclad support for Israel - while it is committing the most documented atrocities in Gaza & elsewhere - is making people worldwide hate America more and more.

  • The IDF sprayed the activists on their boats with skunk water and reports of sea mines in the water around the boats were received. All flotilla boats have now been detained.
  • In one city in Morrocco police have already killed several Palestine solidarity protesters.
  • Last night in London a large march chanted LET THEM SAIL! LET AID IN! END ZIONISM! END THE GENOCIDE!
  • President Gustavo Petro announced on X that his government was expelling Israeli diplomats and cancelling Colombia’s free trade agreement in light of Israel’s actions. He said Colombia “must pursue all the appropriate demands, including through Israeli courts” to ensure the return of its citizens, and replacement of US-supplied weapons with national equipment.
  • In Milan, Italy thousands of people occupied Milano Cadorna station and blocked the tracks in solidarity with the flotilla and against the genocide in Gaza.
  • Thousands rallied outside the Israeli regime consulate in Istanbul, denouncing the attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla.
  • Protesters in Mexico City rallied throughout the city demanding President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Secretary of Foreign Relations to take immediate protective measures for the members of the Mexican delegation present in the Global Flotilla Sumud!
  • Protesters blocked a major motorway in Belfast, Ireland demanding end to Gaza Genocide.
  • Students in Spain are protesting in support of Palestine and the Global Sumud Flotilla.
  • The police in Tangier, Morocco removed their caps and joined the demonstration for dignity, in solidarity with the Global Sumud and Gaza Flotilla.
  • Protests were also reported in Greece, Jordan, Sweden, Tunisia, Canada, Berlin, Barcelona, Sydney, Egypt, Scotland, and many more global cities.
  • In the meantime the zionists continue to slaughter Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
  •  Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar drops the bombshell: "Trump's American 20-point plan regarding Gaza—the document we reviewed during the meeting with Arab and Islamic countries—was not the same one. Trump's announcement of the plan is just an 'announcement from their side' only."
  • 🇮🇷 The United States BLOCKS Iran from 2026 FIFA World draw over Israel. The United States just denied visas to Iran’s national football delegation, stopping them from attending the 2026 World Cup draw.
  • Newly leaked correspondence shows Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison vetted Marco Rubio’s loyalty to Israel back in 2015, arranging meetings with Israeli diplomats and Tony Blair before Rubio emerged as a GOP star. Ellison later poured millions into Rubio’s campaign and remains one of Israel’s biggest U.S. backers, funding the Tony Blair Institute with $350M and pledging to help redevelop “New Gaza” alongside Trump.
  • Gaza activist marah khalad @mar80549 writes: 'I want to say to everyone in the naval fleets that they have truly arrived… yes, they have reached the deepest depths of our hearts and left an indelible mark. They did not break the blockade, but they shattered the harsh silence of the world, igniting in us a feeling of warmth and hope, and made us realize that we are not alone, that there are those who think of us, support us, and share the heartbeat of our lives and dreams'.
  • The U.S. Air Force has shifted over 30 tanker aircraft from Europe to the Middle East, while the Navy has deployed Gerald Ford aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean. The buildup strongly echoes the military posture seen in the days before the 12-day war between Israel & Iran. Looks like Israel and the US are going to take another shot at Iran.
  • Hit the streets folks - now is the time to speak against this madness!

Patrik Baab: Europe Prepares the Public for War with Russia

Patrik Baab is a German journalist and best-selling author who reported on both sides of the frontline in Ukraine.

Baab argues that the European leaders have painted themselves into a corner and increasingly see war with Russia as the only path forward.

How does the EU-NATO think that would go?

Baab says that the European elite see war as a way to avoid losing power. The hope is to widen the war and draw Russia into the Baltics region for battle.

He says the west organized a coup in Ukraine in 2014 and investors make more money by pushing the region deeper into war. Baab calls it 'bankruptcy delay'.

Without Russian gas and oil Germany's economy is not competitive anymore and in decline.

As a consequence international investors will leave the Euro-zone.

J..P. Morgan and BlackRock manage the debts in Ukraine. Germany's current Chancellor Merz was a representative for BlackRock.  Thus Merz is playing a financial game against his own people all to benefit the US.

By turning over the war to the EU-NATO the US can make money by selling weapons and not suffer direct conflict.

Film: Germany's Israel Obsession

Prominent Jewish Australian journalist Antony Loewenstein returns to his ancestral home, Germany, to investigate how the country’s impulse never to repeat the horrendous anti-Semitism that led to the Holocaust has resulted in the suppression of any criticism of Israel and its actions in Gaza.

With critics of Israel being sacked, cancelled, silenced, arrested and banned from Germany, one Jewish philosopher has called this a “McCarthyism” for the 21st century. We’ll see how in today's Germany, a nation that killed most of his family but granted him citizenship in 2011, Loewenstein is told, as a Jew, what is acceptable to say about Israel. To find out why the German authorities are so committed to stifling any criticism of Israeli actions and what it means for democracy and human rights in the country, he will meet those being arrested and suffering job losses for criticizing Israel, the people enforcing these laws and those on the far right claiming to support Israel.

The journey will reveal the ultimate irony - how determination to fight anti-Semitism is actually being used to empower the very forces, the far right, with the closest ties to Germany's dark fascist past.
