America: It's Going to Be a Wild Ride

I watched Donald Trump's inaugural speech today with three other housemates and none of us were impressed.  He's living in another age - I see Trump trying to hang on to the long passed time of American military supremacy and economic domination.  One last gasp before the US empire crashes under the weight of its own hypocrisy and contradictions.

He said a few things that were decent but one must question them as pure political rhetoric as just a quick review of his cabinet appointments (full of corporate operatives) strongly undercuts his claims that he will return the power to the people that the 'elites in Washington' have unfairly taken from them.

Trump blames other nations (especially China) for 'stealing our jobs' but we all know that it was the absolute greed of the corporations that drove them to close production plants across America and move jobs to places overseas where labor was cheaper and environmental regulations were virtually non-existent. Just look at the air quality in India and China for example.  Now in order to 'bring those jobs home' Trump, and the right-wing dominated Congress, want to finish turning the US into a third-world dictatorship where 'regulations on the job creators' are a thing of the past.

Trump will likely finish off what little good will might still exist toward America around the globe.  The inevitable collapse of the US imperial project will now accelerate.

Obama often fooled many people overseas (and at home) with his slick talk and friendly demeanor - even while he was dropping bombs on Libya as he did just the day before Trump took his oath of office. Donald Trump won't be able to pull off that magic trick so easily.

I believe the key organizing strategy in the coming four years on an international level will be to utterly reject US leadership on virtually every issue - from climate change to NATO and beyond.  The world must isolate the US as a reactionary and undemocratic rogue state.  Protests around the world should not just focus on Trump but on the US imperial project that is now totally committed to global domination for the benefit of corporate interests.  Concern for the people of the world or the environment is off the table in Washington.  Democracy is a meaningless word now.

The people of the world must demand that their leaders completely reject the US as a role model or a voice of reason.

This corporate take over of the US government runs far deeper than Trump.  He is not an aberration from the norm - Trump represents the norm in Washington.  We are now ruled by Christian fundamentalism (the American Taliban), an economic expansion ideology that has no concern for the planet, and a military ethic that carries with it strong Puritan evangelical strains.  Greatness only means domination - of everything.

For those of us living here in America we must not restrict our protests to calling out Trump.  We must recognize how the Democrats regularly collaborate with the right-wing reactionary corporate forces.  Just days ago in the US Senate 12 Democrats joined with Republicans to kill a bill that would have allowed American citizens to purchase cheaper medicines from Canada.  The Democrats support swung the vote to satisfy the interests of big pharma.  In the US we must see that we don't have a legislative solution to our problems as the corporations have the government under lock down and they have the key$.

Public protest and non-violent civil resistance in the tradition of Gandhi, ML King, and Dorothy Day are where we must move - collectively as a nation.

In Washington we now have the classic definition of fascism - the wedding of government and corporations.  It would have been the same story if Hillary Clinton had been elected.  She would have been more 'sophisticated' and not come across quite as brash and impolite as Trump does. That would have been enough for many Americans - to them it is no problem that we rule the world just as long as we do it with a reassuring smile.  Trump has broken that mold.

Folks had better hang on because this is going to be a wild ride.  Victory will not come to those who think that building support for their single-issue agenda is the way out of this dark moment.  The old business model of every organization fending for itself won't work any more.

Only by connecting all the dots and working to build a broad and unified movement across the nation - linked with our friends internationally - can we put the brakes on this fall over the cliff that the new corporate government in Washington is pushing us toward.

We need to create a unified positive vision such as converting the military industrial complex to build solar, wind turbines, commuter rail systems and more.  This would serve the interests of labor, environmental groups, the unemployed, and the peace movement.  A win-win for all.

Former Newspaper Editor Who Exposed CIA Found Dead

Dr Udo Ulfkotte, the former German newspaper editor whose bestselling book exposed how the CIA controls German media, has been found dead. He was 56.

Ulfkotte was an editor at Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, one of the largest newspapers in Germany, when he published Bought Journalists, the bestselling book that cost him his job and perhaps his life.

German media, who were banned from reporting on his work in recent years, are reporting he died of “heart failure”.

Acknowledging that his life was under threat, Ulfkotte explained that he was in a better position than most journalists to expose the truth because he didn’t have any children who could be threatened.

Speaking to the Russian newspaper Russian Insider, Ulkfotte said: “When I told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (Ulfkotte’s newspaper) that I would publish the book, their lawyers sent me a letter threatening with all legal consequences if I would publish any names or secrets – but I don’t mind. You see, I don’t have children to take care of.“

His fears for a war in Europe, lead him to his decision to tell the truth about corporate media being controlled by intelligence services on behalf of the financial class.

“I’ve been a journalist for about 25 years, and I’ve been educated to lie, to betray, and not to tell the truth to the public,” Ulfkotte told Russia Today. “I was supported by the Central Intelligence Agency, the CIA. Why? Because I am pro-American.”

“The German and American media tries to bring war to the people in Europe, to bring war to Russia. This is a point of no return, and I am going to stand up and say… it is not right what I have done in the past, to manipulate people, to make propaganda against Russia.”

Ulfkotte said most corporate media journalists in the United States and Europe are “so-called non-official cover,” meaning that they work for an intelligence agency. “I think it is especially the case with British journalists, because they have a much closer relationship. It is especially the case with Israeli journalists. Of course with French journalists. … It is the case for Australians, [with] journalists from New Zealand, from Taiwan, well, there is many countries,” he said.

Ulfkotte’s book Bought Journalists became a bestseller in Germany but, in a bizarre twist which Ulfkotte says characterizes the disconnect caused by CIA control of the western media, the book cannot be reported on by the German press.

Ulfkotte said: “No German mainstream journalist is allowed to report about [my] book. Otherwise he or she will be sacked. So we have a bestseller now that no German journalist is allowed to write or talk about.”

Among the stories Ulfkotte says he was ordered by the CIA to plant in his newspaper was a fake story that Libyan President Moammar Gaddafi was building poison gas factories in 2011.

“The German and American media tries to bring war to the people in Europe, to bring war to Russia,” he told RT.

“This is a point of no return, and I am going to stand up and say … it is not right what I have done in the past, to manipulate people, to make propaganda against Russia, and it is not right what my colleagues do, and have done in the past, because they are bribed to betray the people not only in Germany, all over Europe. … I am very fearful of a new war in Europe, and I don’t like to have this situation again, because war is never coming from itself, there is always people who push for war, and this is not only politicians, it is journalists too. … We have betrayed our readers, just to push for war. … I don’t want this anymore; I’m fed up with this propaganda. We live in a banana republic, and not in a democratic country where we have press freedom.”

No 'Missile Offense' in Korea!

Seongju and Gimcheon Residents Occupy The Minjoo Headquarters to Stop THAAD Deployment

Residents of Seongju and Gimcheon [South Korea] as well as Won Buddhists have pitched tents outside the Minjoo Party headquarters in Seoul and vow to stay until the main opposition party agrees to oppose the deployment of the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile [defense] system.

They have been there since January 11 to demand the party officially adopt opposition to the THAAD deployment as its party platform. They also demand the formation of a special committee in the National Assembly to pressure the South Korean government to reverse its agreement with the U.S. to deploy the THAAD missile system.

With [President] Park Geun-hye’s impeachment under review by the Constitutional Court, the anti-THAAD movement is thinking ahead to the next administration. Currently, the Minjoo Party’s Moon Jae-in is a front-runner for the upcoming presidential election, which could be held as soon as April of this year. Should Moon become the next president, he and his Minjoo Party cabinet members will be responsible for answering to the U.S., which has historically imposed its military agenda on the Korean Peninsula, including plans for the THAAD deployment.

The Minjoo Party, however, has yet to adopt an official party platform on the THAAD issue. While certain individual representatives, like the Minjoo Party’s chief Choo Mi-ae, have expressed their concerns about the potential threat to peace posed by the THAAD deployment and have questioned the necessity for such a missile system, the party as a whole has failed to offer a definitive position on the issue. A recent Newsis interview with presidential candidate Moon Jae-in further muddled the Minjoo Party’s position on the issue.

On January 15, Moon said to Newsis that he does not think it is possible for the South Korean government to renege on its THAAD deployment decision with the U.S.. Despite being critical of the Park administration’s hasty and unilateral decision on the THAAD deployment, Moon expressed no intent to block the deployment. He is simply calling for the deployment to be paused while the constitutional court deliberates Park’s impeachment and until the next administration takes office.

People in the fight to oppose the THAAD deployment expressed their outrage against Moon’s comments. A lawyer from Minbyun (Lawyers for a Democratic Society, of which Moon was once a member) questioned Moon’s view of the issue — “Are you saying that a promise made with the U.S. is unbreakable while a promise made with [South Korean] citizens is unimportant?”

On January 16, the sixth consecutive day of the protest directed at the Minjoo Party lawmakers, Won Buddhists, Seongju and Gimcheon residents demanded a meeting with the Minjoo Party chief, Choo Mi-ae. A staff person of Choo’s office informed the residents that Choo would meet with them on Thursday, January 19. “How much longer must we wait?” the residents demanded to know, “Are you saying that six days [of waiting] is not enough so we have to wait another three days?” They added, “We need this meeting immediately so that we can hear Representative Choo’s position on the THAAD deployment issue.”

The persistence of the residents paid off, and Choo Mi-ae met with the residents on January 17. According to the residents who met with Choo, although she agreed that the THAAD system would be ineffective against North Korean missiles and expressed her opposition to the deployment, she did not confirm that her party will adopt an official platform on this issue. She did, however, promise to discuss with fellow lawmakers in the Minjoo Party the formation of a special committee in the National Assembly to address the THAAD deployment issue.

Meanwhile, due to pressures from China, Lotte [corporation], which owns the golf course where the US Forces in Korea (USFK) wants to deploy the THAAD system, is hesitant to finalize its deal with South Korea’s Defense Ministry to give up the golf course in a land swap. The Defense Ministry is awaiting a final approval from Lotte’s board of directors to acquire Lotte’s land and hand it over to the USFK. However, Lotte, feeling pressure from China, which has been strongly opposed to THAAD deployment in Korea and recently ordered an audit of Lotte’s businesses in China, has chosen to delay the decision. With significant investments in China, Lotte cannot ignore the neighboring country’s economic leverage. The deal may not be finalized until early February, later than expected by the Defense Ministry.

Setting Up for War with Russia

Generals from US and NATO discuss at a news conference how they are war gaming in eastern Europe along the Russian border including Poland, Estonia, Romania and Bulgaria.

So it is really a triple-edged strategy at work here. At the least the US-NATO are putting a loaded gun to Moscow's head saying get on your knees and submit to the west or else.

Secondly this is a major influx of profit for the military industrial complex.

Lastly, and most likely, the US-NATO are determined to take down Russia while they believe they still can before the growing Russia-China alliance (economic and military) makes it impossible to do so.

The arrogance of the US will ultimately lead to disaster because once these war mongers get going they are very hard to pull back.  It will be more than interesting to see how Trump deals with all of this.

The Obama administration is the one that is setting all of this in motion just as Trump enters office.  So while there are huge worries about Trump (and major protests planned against him) there has been very little concern and protest against Obama during his two terms in office as he over and over again escalated tensions along the Russian border.



It goes to show the utter hypocrisy of liberal Democrats.  When their party is in control of the White House they don't mind this kind of provocative and aggressive escalation tactics.  But as Trump comes into power those same liberals are holding meetings all over the nation to stop the 'new fascist dictator'.

Sadly they miss the clear reality that it was the old boss that created this mess - not the new boss.

I stand against both bosses - I continue to call both mainstream political parties in the US fascist.  The classic definition of fascism is the wedding of corporations and government.  We have that in the US no matter whether Republicans or Democrats are in power.

Getting Caught Up with Odds & Ends

• Since getting home from Okinawa I've been as busy as a one-armed wall paper hanger.  I had lots of lovely mail to get caught up with - including many gifts coming in for the Global Network as we hit our 25th year of operation.  Thanks to all of you who have been donating.  These donations give us confidence that our supporters appreciate our hard work and think we are heading in the right direction - especially as we face a new president who no one knows for sure what he will actually do once in office.

• I'm also working on my statements and testimony for our coming Zumwalt 12 trial here in Bath Superior Court on February 1-2.  The group is taking this trial very seriously and putting great effort into making our statements to the judge and jury as clear as possible about why we risked arrest at Bath Iron Works in June 18, 2016 during the 'christening' ceremony of the latest Zumwalt 'stealth' destroyer.

• I am also increasing my efforts on the Global Network's 25th annual space organizing conference that will be held in Huntsville, Alabama on April 7-9.  Our brochure is printed and will be in the mail on January 20 - inauguration day.  We've had our first registration come in from a Veterans For Peace member in Tennessee - someone we don't even know.  I've heard from GN board members in India, Sweden, Norway, England and the US that are going to be at the event.  It's very exciting.  You can see the conference brochure here

• I've been enjoying the healthy debate on the No to NATO email list serve during the past couple of weeks.  The discussion, mostly from those in Europe, has gone back and forth on whether peace groups there should focus their upcoming inauguration protests on Trump or keep them directed at the US military empire and the expanding NATO war machine.  Several European peace group leaders have made the point that Trump isn't even in office yet but that is has been Obama who has been directing the massive US expansion of NATO up to Russia's borders including the current movement of hundreds of tanks and other military vehicles to new US military outposts in Poland and beyond.

Trial of Zumwalt 12 Starts Feb. 1 in Bath

Trial of the Zumwalt 12 is scheduled to begin February 1^st at 9:00 a.m. in Sagadahoc Superior Court in Bath (752 High Street) and is expected to last 2 days. 

Members of the group were arrested on June 18^th of last year for blocking the road in front of Bath Iron Works during the ‘christening’ of the USS Michael Mansour, a $4 billion ‘stealth’ destroyer.   They are charged with “obstructing a public way”, a class E. misdemeanor with a maximum sentence of $2000 fine and 6 months in county jail.  

Arrested and charged were: Bruce Gagnon (Bath); Cynthia Howard (Biddeford); Dud Hendrick (Deer Isle); Connie Jenkins (Orono); Tarak Kauff (Woodstock, NY); Richard Lethem (Bath); John Morris (New Gloucester); George Ostensen (Hope); Joan Peck (Brunswick); John Peck (Brunswick); Jason Rawn (Lincolnville); and Russell Wray (Hancock). 

Bar Harbor attorney Lynne Williams has provided legal counsel to the group throughout the case and is attorney-of-record for Joan Peck.  The remaining defendants will represent themselves. 

Members of the Zumwalt 12 stress how important the support from people in the peace and justice community has been over the past few months and hope that many folks will be able to come out for the trial.

Lynne Williams reminds everyone that leafletting at the court house is not permitted, to avoid any appearance of attempting to influence jurors.  However, signs and banners are allowed on public property.

The third graphic from the top shows the plan for the two-runway Marine airfield that will be built on top of pristine Oura Bay.  People make a living from this sacred water body where endangered sea mammals now live. Two million cubic meters of landfill will be put on top of the coral reefs in order to build the airfield.  Is this insane or what?

I'm at the airport in Naha, Okinawa now waiting for my flight to Tokyo.  From there I fly to Minneapolis, Minnesota and then change planes to Boston.  From Boston I take a two-hour bus ride to Portland, Maine where Mary Beth will pick me up and drive me the final 45 minute leg to Bath.  So it's a long trip home.

Yesterday, soon after arriving in Naha we walked through the heart of downtown on the main commercial street that had been closed to auto traffic.  Loads of people were on the streets shopping and listening to music.  So we walked down the middle of the street with Jules Orkin and myself carrying the gold VFP banner and then the Buddhists behind us drumming and chanting up a storm.  It was quite a scene and the best part was when a black GI saw us and made eye connection and gave a nod.  Very special moment.

Update from Okinawa

Photo taken last night after our dinner at a community center near US Marine base where twin-runways are going to be built over pristine Oura Bay which will destroy endangered dugong mammals (relatives of manatees) and coral reefs.

Yesterday morning three of us from Veterans For Peace walked onto Kadena AFB with our banner that says No US Bases on Okinawa.  We were quickly pushed back by security.

This morning after joining protests at US Marine base Camp Schwab for two hours we walked along Oura Bay to get a look at the area where the twin-runways will be built on top of the bay by bringing in massive amounts of landfill.  The water is now crystal clear but won't be for long if this airfield is completed.

It's been a busy couple of days here on Okinawa since arriving.  We've been protesting outside various bases - the US military controls 20% of the entire island for its various Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine bases.  Planes, helicopters and other military vehicles are constantly in motion on the island which creates a huge amount of noise pollution which the population strongly opposes.

Several major base expansion projects are now underway in Okinawa - particularly the twin-runways for Marine aircraft that is scheduled to be built on top of beautifully diverse Oura Bay.  A protest outside Camp Schwab Marine base has been going on daily for more than 900 days and the lead organizer for the movement has been put in jail by the Japanese government on ridiculous charges.  His real crime is that he has been an effective leader.

A second base expansion is the military training area in the Takae forest in the northern part of the island.  We made the 90 minute drive there today and met with villagers who live in the forest (only 140 of them) who have been fighting against the plan to cut large tracts of trees in the forest to construct helipads for the Marine Osprey helicopters (one of which recently crashed in Oura Bay while being refueled by a US Air Force KC-135).

We learned that 25,000 trees have already been cut and roads are being built through the jungle which is loaded with endangered species.  The people have been resisting against this forest destruction for years but the US insisted on the new helipads being built so the colonial puppet Japanese government has complied with the directives from Washington.

All of this base expansion is aimed at China and Russia.  The US is moving 60% of its military forces into the Asia-Pacific (Hillary Clinton named it the 'pivot') thus more airfields, ports-of-call, barracks and weapons depots are required for this major influx of US troops.

You can imagine the same kind of expansion of facilities is happening in Poland today as the Pentagon is moving large supplies of tanks and other military vehicles to that new regional hub.  The environmental consequences of these kinds of base expansions is always extreme.

Several times in the last couple days Okinawan peace leaders have mentioned the name of Caroline Kennedy - JFK's daughter who now serves as Obama's Ambassador to Japan.  She has insisted that the Marine base runways must be completed and the expansion of Marine helipads at Takae inside the forest jungle must go forward.  The word is that the Japanese government has pushed hard in recent months to move these projects along so that her 'legacy' as the US enforcer assigned to control Tokyo will be complete.

Tomorrow we will hold a vigil outside the jail where the Okinawan peace leader Hiroji Yamashiro is being unjustly held.  You can sign a petition calling for his immediate release here

The GI Resistance Movement

Our 35-person  Nipponzan Myohoji delegation joined a large weekly local protest at the front gate of the US's Kadena AFB in Okinawa this morning in the rain.

While standing there with two other Veterans For Peace (VFP) members we held a banner calling for all US bases in Okinawa to be closed.

One of the US security team at the gate and I talked quite a bit during our presence.  He is a private contractor originally from Indiana.  After he retired from the US military he came back to do the same basic job as a contractor and is likely paid much more than when he was on active service.  So he is drinking from the public well twice - getting retirement pay and now working for the Air Force as a contractor.  The American taxpayers are being fleeced by these kind of private security operations.

While talking he was very interested in our group - where we were from, how we traveled, how many of us there were, how long we'd be in Okinawa, etc?  I talked to him about US empire, the Okinawan people's deep rejection of the US military occupation of their lands, and my own time in the Air Force during the Vietnam War.

I told him it was the meetings of the GI Resistance Movement in my barracks room (my first roommate was one of the organizers) that helped to turn me into a peace activist.

I suggested he watch this fabulous documentary video.  Maybe he, or others from US intelligence assigned to Okinawa, will take the time to see this important historical piece.

US-NATO Turning Poland into War Hub

US-NATO tanks on their way (at the level crossing of Gruenwalder Street in Guben, Germany) to Poland for the ultimate war with Russia.  US-NATO want to try to finish what Hitler was not able to do when he invaded the Soviet Union during WW II.  Over 27 million were killed in the Soviet Union as they barely (with not much help from the US) defeated the Nazi Army.

This is not being reported in the mainstream media as we are all distracted with everything Trump.

People, even in the peace movement, are not yet taking this seriously.

Just like Okinawa, where I am now protesting at US bases and is called an 'unsinkable aircraft carrier' for the US, Poland is being turned into a war operations hub.

If a shooting war starts and Russia is attacked by US and NATO then Europe will be turned into burning ruins. Unlike most countries that the US has attacked Russia can actually fight back.  The US would be counter-attack by Russia and would suffer a similar radioactive fate.

At the same time the US (and an expanding NATO alliance that is making Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand 'partners') is encircling China.

The US wants to take down Russia and China - the US can't stand any competitors on the world scene and knows that they must move now toward regime change in Moscow and Beijing because given another 10 years both of those nations will be too strong to take down.  Russia and China are calling for a multi-polar world rather than the current uni-polar world with the USA on top.

The US is making a colossal mistake here and it could very possibly lead to WW III.

Wake up world and smell the coffee.  Resist and survive now before it is too late!

On Way to Okinawa

I am at the airport in Taipei now waiting for my flight to Naha, Okinawa where I will meet a large delegation of monks and nuns (and supporters) from the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist order.  Together we will do peace walks and vigils at various US military bases in Okinawa during the coming week.

I've had connection with this Buddhist order since 1987 when the monks came to a major protest I organized at Cape Canaveral in Florida.  Over the years I've organized 10 peace walks (five in Florida and five in Maine) and monks and nuns from Nipponzan Myohoji have led all of them.  So it was a real honor to be invited to join them for this Okinawa trip.

The US is expanding several of its present bases on the island including one insane plan to build twin-runways at US Marine base called Camp Schwab out into the ocean which will destroy sea life and obviously contaminate pristine Oura Bay that people have built a sustainable life around.

My mind is also on Europe as the US-NATO are holding war games directly on the Russian border at this moment. The US is deploying huge amounts of military hardware in Poland which is being turned into a central US war operations hub in eastern Europe.  It makes one wonder if the Obama team is trying to start a shooting conflict with Russia before they leave office thus cementing Trump into having to carry on this very aggressive anti-Russian stance.

On one 'No to NATO' international email list serve many peace leaders throughout Europe are urging western activists not to just focus their upcoming inaugural protests on Trump as they clearly see it is the Democrat Barack Obama who is inching the globe closer to a full blown war in Europe.  They are saying the message and focus should be 'NO to US military empire' and 'NO to NATO'.  I agree with their thinking.

Mary Beth takes a plane about 1:00 pm from Taipei heading back home.  We had a great time in Taiwan.  After the wedding Emily's parents took us to a magical hot springs spa in the south along the coast and then on a tour of some of the beautiful beaches in that region.  All along the way they fed us very incredible food and even though everyone was tired after the wedding it was a special experience for us to get a closer look at the people and culture of the country.

Great Wedding Moment

There is a great tradition that we witnessed during Julian and Emily's wedding.  The parents and bride and groom go from table to table to have a toast with the people.  Each table can ask the groom to do a particular thing - one table for example had him drain a full glass of wine in one chug.

Julian is a debate coach in Taipei and a group of his students and their moms made the trip south for the wedding.  When we reached their table one of the moms told Julian to stand on a chair and then she gave Emily a raw egg and instructed her to run the egg up the inside of one of Julian's pants legs, cross over to the other side, and then go down the inside of the other pant leg without breaking the egg.

It was the most hilarious thing to watch as Emily very carefully moved the egg up the inside of the pants leg and when she reached his groin the students and their moms were howling in laughter as she gingerly negotiated the egg across to the other side of the pants.

Later Emily said she was very careful the whole time because she did not want to mess up Julian's pants.

It meant alot to Julian that some of his students and moms came so far south to the wedding.  When a brief slide show about the couple was shown the kids cheered at the baby pictures of Julian that appeared on the huge screen.

Julian, with his dry sense of humor, was a good sport through the entire ordeal.

Wonderful Wedding in Taiwan

Two days ago we took a 90-minute high-speed rail ride from Taipei to the southern Taiwanese coastal city of Kaohsiung were Emily is from.  Her parents picked us up at the rail station and took us to her grandfather's home where the elders blessing ceremony was held.

After a huge traditional lunch we made our way to the Grand Hotel in Kaohsiung were we stayed for two nights. The wedding was also held at this beautiful place.  

About 250 people came to the hotel - interestingly some people dressed up but many came in quite casual dress.  Emily the bride wore three different dresses during the ceremony.  Imagine the stress on her to have to keep changing.  Remarkably she held up well throughout.

It's quite a thing to see your own son get married - even more moving when it is done in a country with such a different language and culture.  Julian's mom Becky Acuna and I are so proud of him as we watch him navigate his way with a wonderful new family and way of life in Taiwan.

Today Emily's parents are taking Becky, MB and me to a beach park for the day before we head back to Taipei tomorrow.  Then on Tuesday MB flies back to Maine and I head to Okinawa for a week of peace walking with the Japanese Buddhist order Nipponzan Myohoji as we protest US military bases there on that beleaguered island.

Read This Book!

If the United States in 1945 had been able to ...shed some of its illusions about China, to understand what was happening in that country, and to adopt a realistic policy in America's own interests, Korea and Vietnam would probably never have happened....We would not still be confronted with an unsolvable Taiwan problem....And Mao's China, having come to power in a different way and not thrust into isolation by a hostile West, might be quite a different place.

Those words by US State Department Foreign Service Officer John Service sum up the essence of this very important book.  Service was one of just a handful of American government officials who had any real clue about China and was in the end fired by President Franklin Roosevelt (the grandson of a 'China-trade' opium dealer) because he dared to speak out about US China policy.

I learned so much from this book - it opened my mind in so many ways. For example it changed the way I now think about FDR.  He was totally clueless about China and was a complete captive of the 'China lobby' at the time which was led by Christian fundamentalists in the US who thought their mission in life was to bring China to heel and turn it into a replica of the US - a Christian and capitalist nation.

The disgusting reality of the absolute corruption of Mao's rival Chiang Kai-shek was something I knew a bit about but the back story around Chiang having Roosevelt, Congress, Time Magazine and the 'Christians' wrapped around his finger was more than astonishing - to the tune of massive amounts of US taxpayer dollars and a completely doomed Asia policy.

The book reads easily and I could not put it down during our flight from Boston to Beijing - even though a string of movies were available to me during the long flight.  I kept reading.

I urge everyone to read this book - I got it for $4 online and that included the postage.

You will learn so much - especially how our system works overtime to ignore reality and to remain mired in illusion and corruption.

No War in Korea!

Talk grows in U.S. of possibility of military strikes on N. Korea

WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 (Yonhap) -- Talk is growing in the United States of the possibility of using military strikes to take out North Korea's nuclear and missile capabilities after the North's leader, Kim Jong-un, threatened he's close to testing a long-range missile apparently capable of hitting the U.S.

Kim said in his New Year's Day address that the communist nation has reached the final stage of preparations to test-launch an intercontinental ballistic missile. The remark was seen as a thinly veiled threat that Pyongyang is close to developing a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the continental U.S.

The threat appears to have stoked genuine fears of security among Americans, with reporters bombarding the Defense Department with questions of what the U.S. is going to do about the North's missile, including whether it's going to shoot it down or even launch a preemptive strike before it's fired.

It also prompted President-elect Donald Trump to send a tweet: "North Korea just stated that it is in the final stages of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching parts of the U.S. It won't happen!"

 On Wednesday, a private intelligence analysis firm, Stratfor, even laid out a list of potential targets in North Korea, including the Yongbyon nuclear complex, home to the North's plutonium-producing reactor and reprocessing facility.

"When considering an attack on North Korea, there are two broad categories of strikes to deliberate. The first is a minimalist strike, specifically focused on dismantling the North's nuclear weapons program. In this scenario, the United States would engage North Korean nuclear objectives only," Stratfor said in an analysis piece carried by MarketWatch and, titled, "How the U.S. could derail North Korea's nuclear program by force."

   "By not launching strikes on other North Korean targets, Washington leaves the door open, if only slightly, for de-escalation if Pyongyang can be convinced that the strike is not part of a regime change operation. What benefits Pentagon planners in this scenario is that a limited strike requires less resources and preparation, enhancing the element of surprise,"

   Potential targets in the minimalist strike include the Yongbyon complex, including the 5-megawatt nuclear reactor and the reprocessing plant, as well as the Pyongsan uranium mine that provides fuel for the reactor, and the Pyongsong nuclear research and development facility, known as the North's "Silicon Valley," Stratfor said.

"These facilities form the heart of North Korean nuclear production infrastructure. If they were destroyed or disabled, the North Korean nuclear production network would be crippled, set back years at least," it said.

U.S. defense officials were quoted by Reuters as saying that if ordered, the U.S. military has three options to respond to a North Korean missile test: a pre-emptive strike before it is launched, intercepting the missile in flight, or allowing a launch to take place unhindered.

Still, many arms and defense experts agree that a military strike is too risky to consider, especially in consideration of the proximity of Seoul to the border with North Korea and the possibility of the North showering artillery shells on the bustling capital area.

Military strikes "would be a wild gamble, especially with the Seoul-Inchon region — South Korea's commercial, political and population heart — so close to the border. Although the DPRK would lose any war, it could cause horrendous casualties before succumbing," said Doug Bandow, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute and a former special assistant to President Ronald Reagan.

"Yet the great achievement of America's military presence for the past six decades has been to prevent precisely such a conflict from occurring," he said in a recent piece carried by the National Interest.

Jeffrey Lewis, an expert on North Korea's military, was also quoted by Reuters as questioning whether U.S. missile defenses could shoot down a test missile, saying destroying North Korea's nuclear and missile programs would be a huge and risky undertaking.

Lewis, director of the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), was also quoted as saying that the North's main nuclear and missile test sites were on different sides of the country, and an ICBM can be launched from anywhere in the country because it's mobile.

Robert Manning, a senior Atlantic Council analyst, said U.S. options are limited on the North.

"While everyone says North Korea is at the top of the U.S. foreign policy agenda, other than strengthening deterrence, imposing tough sanctions that remove North Korea from the international financial system, there is little the U.S. can do in the near-term that does not risk a war, thousands of U.S. and hundreds of thousands of South Korean deaths," he said.

Assange on Fox News

Normally Fox News would vilify Julian Assange but in this case they gave him a chance to explain that Russia did not 'hack' the US election.

I can't blame Fox News for wanting to protect their chosen candidate Trump as he has repeatedly said that he does not believe Russia did any hacking of the US election.  CNN and MSNBC protect the Democrats all the time.  Turn about is fair play.

It's obvious to me that the Democrats are trying to pass blame onto Russia for their own disastrous loss to Trump in the election.  In addition, the neo-cons, who basically control the Dem party, were eager to push toward regime change in Moscow after Hillary got elected.  Their plans were interrupted when many working class people (largely former Democrats) in the rust belt states voted for Trump because the Obama administration did virtually nothing for these voters who turned out to be hungry for change due to their bleak economic situation.  (Obama did virtually nothing for the black community either during his eight years in office while he was very generous to Wall Street.)

Assange holds steady during this interview to the true mission of Wikileaks which is to expose government corruption and corporate domination of the political process.

I remain an admirer of Assange and am grateful to Fox News (no matter their agenda) for this extensive interview.

Made it to China

MB and I made it to Beijing at about 9:00 pm last night after a 14-hour flight from Boston.  Usually I'd watch 4-5 movies during that long of a trip but I was so engrossed in the book called The China Mirage: The Hidden History of American Disaster in Asia that I read the book during the flight.

After arriving we took a six-minute ride on a hotel shuttle from the airport and this is what Beijing looked like to us - maybe the air pollution was even worse than pictured above.  We went to bed and woke up around 3:00 am and never got back to sleep.  At 6:00 am we left the hotel heading back to the airport for our flight to Taiwan and the smog was so thick that the shuttle driver could barely see in front of him as he crawled along the road.

On the plane we read a newspaper article that said the pollution was largely coming from factories that were illegally releasing toxic smoke when they should not be doing so.  Many people are wearing masks with some kind of air regulator on them.  It reminded me of India where I recently experienced the reality of night skies without being able to see stars or the moon.  We humans are killing ourselves.

Today we arrived in Taipei and my son Julian picked us up at the airport and took us to our hotel near his apartment.  His wedding to Emily is on January 7 and before then we'll be seeing some sites.  The air here is clean and clear and the weather feels much like Florida without the intense humidity.  Beijing was very cold and three hours later we wished we were wearing shorts and sandals.  Our poor bodies are confused by all the changes they are going through right now.

More later...right now a nap is in order.

I highly recommend reading the book.  It's a mind blower in many ways.  I'll write more about it when I can. In the meantime you can read the review linked above.

Pushing for War with Russia

Ukraine's fascist madman Poroshenko gives 'award medals' to US madmen Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC).

Later Graham told the media that 2017 should be a 'year of offense' against Russia.  These cats are out of their minds but are now in power in Washington.
