There was a protest yesterday in Portland, Maine where several groups joined together to stand against a Syria attack. We marched a bit through the city and concluded with a closing circle where folks were asked to do something each day in the coming week to stop this coming attack.
Sadly the top columnist from the Portland Press Herald wrote a slam peace that appeared in the Sunday edition of the paper. I believe the columnist was trying to do a couple things with his piece. One was to provide cover for Obama and our congressional delegation to support war by showing peace movement support for "limited strikes". Secondly was to make us look a bit wacky so as to ensure that the reading public steers clear of us. He accomplished both of his nefarious goals.
When interviewed by any reporter you have to measure your words very very carefully. Sadly some of those interviewed in this piece didn't do so. It's also helps to know the tendencies of any particular journalist. The one who wrote this hit piece is a long-time mouthpiece for the Democratic party.
It also doesn't hurt to know that the newspaper is owned by a Wall Street hedge fund billionaire whose wife, Chellie Pingree (a Democrat), is our congressional representative. In the old days they called this kind of stuff feudalism.
