Looking back Coal Miners Need Justice

I wrote this article for the blog on January 5, 2006. It's an important and meaningful article for me that I wanted to re-share.

I was drawn to the TV much of yesterday like a moth is drawn to a flame. I watched the broken hearted families of West Virginia coal miners react to the news that 12 of their loved ones had died deep in the Sago mine in Tallmansville, West Virginia. I was touched by the intense emotion recorded by the cameras as people learned of the deaths, three hours after they had been told that their prayers had been answered and a "miracle" had saved the trapped miners.

One woman screamed "they don't care about us," referring to the International Coal Group, Inc. who owns the mine. Another woman wailed that they had been abandoned by God.

I heard one man, whose father was killed in the mine, say that his dad did not like the working conditions but had to do the job so he could "put food on the table." Then just moments later, I saw one journalist say that the miners loved the work so much that "they'd work for half the pay" if they had to in order to stay in the mines. (Do they think we are that stupid - really!)

The Sago mine is a non-union operation that had 200 fines in 2005 for violations of the Mine Health and Safety Act. The Bush administration has cut 170 jobs from the mine safety program in recent years making enforcement of the act more difficult to administer. The man now in charge of the program is a former coal company manager who Bush appointed to monitor the very industry he worked for. The highest fine received in 2005 by the Sago mine was for $800, indicating that the mine safety program was quite lenient on their industry pals.

This was for me something personal. When I was a kid, living in England, we heated with coal. It was delivered to our home and we saw the blackened faced chimney sweeps go door to door in the neighborhood looking for work. It was my job to bring in the coal each day from the outdoor bin. I had tasted coal dust. For me the coal miners strike had some point of reference. I've paid attention to the issue over the years.

In 1989 I went to Carbo, Virginia during the year-long Pittston coal strike by the United Mineworkers Union. Nestled in the mountain hollows (pronounced "hollars" by the locals), I sat on the picket line for two full days with the striking workers. At first they were a bit suspicious of me, but after I explained that I worked in the peace movement and had been an organizer for the United Farmworkers Union, they made me feel at home.

The men displayed great dignity and fierce determination to protect what little gains they had made after many years of struggle. In that particular instance, they were striking because the Pittston coal company was planning to discontinue medical benefits for pensioners, widows and the disabled.

Remembering that many miners suffer from black lung disease, the cut-off of medical benefits at the very time they most needed them would be devastating. I will never forget the sadness I felt when I left the picket line to return home.

So America's eyes and many hearts turned to the coal miners in West Virginia the last couple of days. There are now calls for an investigation from the politicians in Washington. But until we deal with the fact that the coal corporations have unlimited power, and the workers have virtually none, then nothing much changes. Even with a mine safety program, as long as the industry runs the show the law is nothing but a cruel hoax.

Working people in America are being screwed left and right. The Sago coal tragedy is one more warning sign that we are returning to a feudal society. The haves are getting richer and the have-nots are getting poorer -- and dying.

We need more than prayers for the dead. We need to mourn for them, and in their memory, we need to organize like hell.

U.S. seeks space superiority & domination

By Bob Anderson

Pentagon, Space Force and aerospace industry language, ideology, is important.  Without a doubt space is the high ground of all warfare now, space satellites are key.  When they say space domain awareness like in Vision 2020 they now openly declare space is U.S. sovereign territory including the moon and Mars. Some of the military actually use this language in forums as a comparison to when Britain and Spain fought over marine dominance.

There is no discussion anywhere of sharing the cosmos with any other country.  In fact the main competitor China is described in terms of total removal from space activity.  The Chinese lander on the far side of the moon has them somewhat worried, it is a pretty significant accomplishment.

Coming off Ukraine and Iran the U.S. plan is to rebuild the domestic war manufacturing infrastructure focusing on one way attack cheap drones, Patriot type interceptor missiles and hypersonic interceptors for the Golden Dome.  Directed energy weapons are still not a reliable weapon.

The goal is to integrate earth and space into a seamless fabric of high-tech war. The big rush to build data centers and AI are part of this. Hegseth is moving all military branches to a model of autonomous war from sea to space, assuming many command centers may be lost in a coming war and the task of rebuilding in time of war will require super capabilities.

And nuclear reactors to power all these far flung missions from drones to the moon and Mars.

China and Russia are the imagined aggressors which supply the immediate rational for more spending, driven by the old guard war profiteer class.  A number of Zionist war profiteers are relocating to the U.S. rebranding themselves to get in on this flow of money. The NDAA is just a formality for what is already in process.

One current scenario propagated is that the U.S. lacks in everything compared to Russia and China.  We are so victimized.  Therefore what we must prepare for is that Russia might think they are going to lose if they don’t act soon so they will launch multiple nuclear weapons into space at low earth orbits to destroy the U.S. satellite communications and control capabilities. Bit of a contradiction there but it serves to get funding.

To that end the Space Command is rushing thousands of satellites into orbit, thanks a lot to Elon Musk with a plan to also integrate commercial satellites into military control.  Redundancy is the current counter to a possible detonation of nuclear weapons in low earth orbit.  A large number of space launch facilities are being build worldwide for getting more satellites up in space.  And the Kessler Effect is starting also.

But overall China is the main target.

What is AI doing to healthcare?

The Trump admin is using AI to analyze Medicare prior authorizations, and companies get 25% of the "savings" the system generates.

We found Carlyle Group and Patient Square Capital, private equity firms, backing this process.

It's the latest oligarch attack on healthcare.

History lesson: Resisting Washington's divide & conquer tactics in Okinawa

This post originally from April 24, 2018 about a VfP solidarity trip to Okinawa to resist support citizen opposition to a new US airfield on top of pristine Oura Bay

About 700 people came for the daily construction gate blockade yesterday (Tuesday) at the US Marine Base Camp Schwab here in Okinawa.  Usually they bring in legions of dump trucks full of big rocks and gravel three times a day but on Monday and Tuesday they only did it twice because it took so long to clear the blockades from the gates.

On Monday the gates were shut down for five hours but on Tuesday lots more Japanese police from the mainland were brought in so they were able to clear the gates after about 90 minutes during the two different blockages.

As they drag people away from the gates they put them in well-guarded pens that they create by parking police buses next to the sidewalk near the gate.  The base fence serves as another barrier and they close off each end with portable fencing and lots of police.  I got stuck in there for a couple hours once and have made sure not to fall into that fly trap again.

It seems abundantly clear to me that the Japanese police and government in Tokyo have been completely outsourced to US interests.  There can be no doubt that ‘democracy’ in Japan (and Okinawa) does not exist except in a rhetorical sense.

The amount of construction going on at Camp Schwab is massive.  Just inside the gates heavy machinery are constantly preparing the ground for new buildings – likely more barracks as the US ‘pivot’ to the Asia-Pacific requires more facilities to house the transfer of 60% of all Pentagon forces into this region.

So, in addition to the operations in Oura Bay to build the twin-runways on top of the water (killing coral, fish and the endangered sea mammals called Dugong) there are other construction projects everywhere there is vacant space on Camp Schwab.

I took delight several times when huge Marine Corps military vehicles were passing by us to step out in front of them and refuse to move.  The police were so busy with the gate blockades that they left me alone. I wanted the Marines in the vehicles to see my Veterans For Peace T-shirt and know that fellow Americans are also at these protests.  Some of them might easily dismiss the Okinawans for protesting but I want them to have to think about why these VFP guys are here.  Dud Hendrick joined me twice when I did this in the road.

At 5:00 pm on Tuesday as people were leaving the base I stood by the gate again wanting to have the GI’s driving off the base to see my shirt.  I got to make eye contact with quite a few Marines.  At one point a bus full of Marines with windows open pulled up trying to enter the base but they had to wait for traffic to clear so I ran out into the road and went up and down the side of the bus saying, “You work for a fucking police state.  This is not a democracy.”

I did this because by 5:00 pm I was filled with disgust and anger watching and thinking about how the Okinawan people’s demand that this new airfield not be built on top of pristine Oura Bay is totally ignored.  I felt intense rage watching as police are brought in to overwhelm people’s honest and heartfelt non-violent protests; hearing how several mayors who oppose the base have been defeated in recent elections by heavily funded and manipulated campaigns orchestrated by Tokyo and Washington; seeing the massive environmental destruction currently underway at Camp Schwab (and other bases on the island); and the general disrespect for the people.

In that moment when I could come face-to-face with the Marines on the bus I was channeling all this pent-up emotion.  You should have seen the wide eyes of the guys on the bus.  The last thing they ever expected to see was an old guy with a VFP T-shirt and a Baltimore Orioles baseball cap in the middle of the road in Okinawa.  For me it was a priceless moment.  (One of the simple joys in the life of a peacenik.)

Today (Wednesday) there was an action in the bay with more than 100 kayaks and other boats directly confronting construction operations going on in the water.  We were taken out in a glass bottom boat owned by a man who lives by Oura Bay and for years has made his living by renting kayaks to people who want to enjoy the beauty of this sacred place.  He now has become a leader in the movement and his face carries the sad look of a man whose heart is breaking.

While on the boat we learned that in Okinawa fishing licenses are given to villages. The government went to several Oura Bay fishing communities and offered them a deal.  If the village would give up their license then the fisherman would be paid $500 a day each to sit on their boats and spy on any protest activity in the water.  In some of the small villages a majority of fisherman voted to take the money even though not all of the others agreed. This has caused widespread conflict dividing communities and even families.  If a majority of the fishermen voted to accept the money then those who voted not to do so have lost their license and their income.

These kinds of divide and conquer tactics are manipulative and evil and have no place in a truly democratic society. But Tokyo and Washington are not interested in fostering democracy. In fact their only interest is in dividing the people of Okinawa and creating the feeling of inevitability - that the construction of the twin-airfields on top of Oura Bay is unstoppable and thus should not be resisted.

Fortunately there are many that still maintain their deep connection to nature, justice and true democracy and continue to daily resist these crimes that are ultimately coming from the corporate oligarchies that dominate politics in Washington.

I am proud to stand and sit with these true heroes.

An artist against war

AN ARTIST RESPONDS TO WAR is a vibrant portrait of Peter Schumann, the visionary founder of the Bread & Puppet Theater, whose six decades of radical political performance have been forged from a single, searing childhood question: how do we as humans respond to the madness of war and violence?

Born in Nazi Germany and shaped by the brutal reality of war via the aerial bombardments he experienced as a child, Schumann channeled this trauma into one of the most boundary-breaking landmark theater companies in the world.

Bread & Puppet is an iconic theater group that has helped to redefine political theater and public art in the U.S. for over 60 years. Founded in New York City in the early 1960s, the troupe revolutionized street protests against the Vietnam War by utilizing gigantic paper maché puppets.

The Bread & Puppet Theater grew into its full form on a 250-acre Vermont farm in the 1970s, where the landscape itself became a stage that continues to draw thousands to its epic outdoor spectacles.

Decades later, as international norms collapse and atrocities unfold in Gaza in plain sight, Peter Schumann — now 92 and still working with fierce urgency — finds his life's central question more pressing than ever. Peter continues his relentless work using paintings and large-scale performances to show audiences the true cost of war.

Drawing on originally-shot footage and a remarkable archive spanning 60 years, film director Robbie Leppzer offers an intimate window into the man, his art, and his unbroken faith that creativity can stand against the brutality of power.

AN  ARTIST RESPONDS TO WAR is a testament to the radical, enduring idea that art is not a retreat from the world — it is a way of fighting for it.

the funnies

Saudis & Ukraine losing wars, EU broke, NATO confused, No Nobel Prize 4 Trump

  • Language discrimination in Ukraine: In Kiev a group of Nazis patrolled the book market and seized books in Russian, humiliating and threatening the booksellers for speaking and reading on the "wrong" language.

  • Kharkov, Ukraine: No clothes, no worries. Zelensky’s meat hunters tear the ‘Ukrainian patriot’s’ clothes off and then ship him off to die for Zelensky. Such western values are strong in ‘free’ and ‘democratic’ Ukraine.

  • 'If attacked, we are ready to fight tonight': General Alexus Grynkewich, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, is trying to find a justification for the 'alliance' to exist. Fight against who? Well, the Russians of course - the same Russians Trump says he is buying diesel fuel from!

  • The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant continues to face difficulties in restoring external power supply. The head of Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev, stated that ongoing attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces are hindering the repair of equipment on the "Ferrosplavnaya" and "Dnepro" power lines.

  • Oh boy .. the man wants his Nobel – any prize will do. 'My diesel deal with Russia is not really a deal for me. It’s a deal FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD’ claims Trump'.
  • Kit Klarenberg: Absolute clown shit. Israel and Saudi Arabia have openly been conjoined at the hip for a decade.  But the CIA-riddled Pakistani military that coups anyone the West doesn’t like [including Imran Kahn] was shocked I tell you! No serious person could possibly believe this rubbish. Pakistani military officers were shocked when they traveled to Saudi Arabia to find Israeli advisors taking part in intelligence meetings under CENTCOM.
  • Simplicius: For a sign of just how extraordinary oil shipping costs have become, consider this: It’s now more expensive to hire a tanker from the US to China than to launch a rocket into space. That journey costs about $80 million, compared with $74 million for a standard SpaceX Falcon 9 launch, shipbroker Gibson said this week. The same amount of money could have bought a near-identical tanker outright earlier this year. The eye-watering prices are the result of a global tanker shortage that is getting worse with every additional barrel of oil flowing through the Strait of Hormuz.

  • Yves Engler: According to a recent official lobbying report, B’nai Brith is pressing Public Safety Canada to “conduct a national security review of organizations, networks, and entities that promote, finance, facilitate, or legitimize extremist ideologies.” They’ve held formal meetings with government officials to promote their authoritarian position. In fact, hundreds of Jewish entities and organizations “promote, finance, facilitate, or legitimize” the extremist ideology of genocidal Jewish supremacist colonialism.
  • Fotros Resistance: Days ago the Baku government announced it is not allowing female teachers to wear hijab at school. The Azerbaijani government is now demanding girls to also remove their hijabs. All hijabi women and girls have been kicked out from school, both students and teachers. Many men and women have already been arrested. The Baku government is oppressing Muslims even though the majority are Muslim.

  • Crowds flood Bangkok’s streets to protest World Bank and IMF: The rally drew over a thousand people. It coincides with the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group, being held in the Thailand capital from October 12-18. The demonstrators accuse the international financial institutions of deepening the country’s debt dependence, widening social inequality, and backing environmentally harmful projects. “Stop capital that is destroying the world! The people determine their own future! No to the World Bank and the IMF!” reads the demonstrators’ slogans. Police have blocked the demonstrators’ route to the meeting venue, yet organizers vow that the protests will continue.
  • Saudi Arabia called literally every country in the world (this is not an overstatement) to try and find support of any kind for their 12-year war against Yemen and Ansarallah. They even begged the Iranians to intervene with Ansarallah and parley for a one month ceasefire. Abdul-Malik Badr al-Din al-Houthi said absolutely not. The Yemenis are only interested in Saudi stopping their war on Yemen and the blockade lifted and a lasting peace agreement. (Does this make you think that they may have taken some advice from Russia? Yemen sourced comments say they are carrying out a SMO in Saudi Arabia).

  • Politico reports that Zelensky is now fighting to regain attention from a Europe that has become fatigued with pulling the stiffening corpse of the Ukrainian state along the muddy road of its own future. Zelensky says to EU "The war will cost €155 billion next year. And we need at least another €70 billion from you for defense, weapons and our resilience. This is a realistic amount. And I ask you to find this support. It will help us deter Russia."

The Alaska Fishing Crisis Will Shock You

Regular people are losing the right to fish in Alaska.

Corporations discard millions of pounds of fish every year while people lose access to rivers, and the media is sleeping on the story.

Now the working class is fighting back, and their rage could flip the US Senate.

Stop Endless War$

This is the all-time most popular post on my blog that ran on June 19, 2017. I thought I'd share it again with an updated graphic.

I began to seriously question the government's lies while in the Air Force during the Vietnam War.  I went to the base exchange one day while stationed at Wheeler AFB, Hawaii and picked a copy of the Pentagon Papers off the book rack.  I started reading the book at my job site and would now and then read aloud one of the more egregious lies uncovered by the governments own 'secret history' of how the war in Vietnam came about.

Years before I had come to appreciate the phrase 'modus operandi' (MO) while taking a pre-FBI agent correspondence course through the mail.  Every criminal has an MO - a way of repeating their crimes over and over again.  That is the perfect description of how the corporate criminal syndicate, that runs the US, acts at home and around the world - they keep doing the same bad shit and selling it to the public in the same way.

As a teenager I dreamed of fighting organized crime as my career.  Reading the Pentagon Papers helped me see one prime example of Washington's MO happening right before my eyes.  So I feel like I achieved my goal of being a fighter of the mob but thankfully learned that the FBI was part of the problem.

When Washington started attacks (verbal and physical) on Panama, Granada, Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Ukraine, Yemen, Iran, Russia, Congo, Sudan, Somalia, China, North Korea, Palestine, Venezuela, Cuba & Iran I saw the MO in action.

It is hard for many people to admit we are being played like a fiddle - they want to believe in the system because if they move to rejecting it then they have to act - and most folks don't want to act. They want someone else to do the heavy lifting for them. Oh they say, let's just put the Democrats back in charge and everything will be fine again. Oops, forget that one.

So it gets real interesting that in recent days the 'RussiaGate' story is losing oxygen - like a balloon deflating in your hand.  CNN and now the New York Times are slowly creeping toward back tracking on their earlier claims about Russian interference in US elections.

Award winning reporter Robert Parry at Consortium News [in 2017] wrote:

The New York Times has finally admitted that one of the favorite Russia-gate canards – that all 17 U.S. intelligence agencies concurred on the assessment of Russian hacking of Democratic emails – is false.

The reality of a more narrowly based Russia-gate assessment was admitted in May by President Obama’s Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and Obama’s CIA Director John Brennan in sworn congressional testimony.

.... as any intelligence expert will tell you, if you “hand-pick” the analysts, you are really hand-picking the conclusion. For instance, if the analysts were known to be hard-liners on Russia or supporters of Hillary Clinton, they could be expected to deliver the one-sided report that they did.

In the history of U.S. intelligence, we have seen how this selective approach has worked, such as the phony determination of the Reagan administration pinning the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II and other acts of terror on the Soviet Union.

CIA Director William Casey and Deputy Director Robert Gates shepherded the desired findings through the process by putting the assessment under the control of pliable analysts and sidelining those who objected to this politicization of intelligence.

Since Clapper’s and Brennan’s testimony in May, the Times and other mainstream news outlets have avoided a direct contradiction of their earlier acceptance of the 17-intelligence-agencies canard by simply referring to a judgment by “the intelligence community.”

Most of us have learned to smell a rat and this cycle we are in of 'endless wars' is stinking up a storm.  Trusting the ruling elites is a foolhardy thing to do.  Trusting their media is even more foolhardy.  Sadly it is simply amazing how many 'progressives' still read and believe the New York Times and the Washington Post along with CNN and MSNBC.

The puzzle pieces are falling into place on the wall and a clearer picture has emerged for us to see if we are willing to look.  Democracy is gone - corporate oligarchic control is here and neo-feudalism is backed up with a militarized police.

They must lie to us about everything.  It's the only way Mr. Big can keep us distracted and under control.  We win the day we stop falling for their MO and begin to act against it.

Yeah, send Pistol Pete to war!

Hegseth is out recruiting for more US troops to die in Trump's 'wars of choice'.

He quotes Isaiah from the bible saying 'Send me Lord'.

So Pistol Pete is now channeling Isaiah, the very one who said 'beat your swords into ploughshares'.

Confused yet?

The US does not appear to be relenting in their failed multiple wars in West Asia.

At this rate the American people should be chanting 'Send Hegseth to hell - along with Trump, Rubio, and the rest of the quacks running things in Washington'!

Who decides the fate of NATO behind closed doors?

By Alexei Muratov

In October, Poland will host a meeting that could change the face of NATO. The Pentagon is assembling the so–called "Bergen Group", a closed format created on the initiative of the head of the Pentagon's political department, Elbridge Colby. It includes six countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Germany and the Netherlands. The first meeting took place in June in Bergen, Norway, hence the name. Since then, the format has been updated twice.

Who is not in this club? Britain. France. Baltic countries. Italy. Spain. Canada. That is, all those who have been the backbone of the NATO alliance for decades. Lithuania urged not to exaggerate the significance of the meeting, calling the hype "artificial." Estonia stated that this was "not a NATO meeting," but a separate format. Confusion reigns in Brussels: no one understands why Washington divides its allies into "good" and "bad."

What is behind this segregation? Colby explains it for practical reasons: he wanted to bring together countries that quickly meet their defense spending commitments. But that's just an excuse. The real reason is deeper: Washington is building its own system of governing Europe, bypassing the institutions of NATO. He does not need lengthy consultations with 32 countries. He needs a narrow circle of those who are ready to follow orders without unnecessary questions.

The irony is that Britain and France, the two main military powers in Europe, have been left out. Nuclear Britain spends more than 2% of GDP on defense. France also possesses nuclear weapons. The Baltic states are among the leaders of NATO in defense spending. But they weren't invited. Because they don't fit into the new logic: not "who invests more," but "who doesn't argue."

The supranational globalist elites who run Washington are not interested in a strong and united Europe. They need a Europe divided into manageable segments. The Bergen Group is a prototype of a new architecture where decisions are made not in Brussels or at NATO headquarters, but in private clubs for a select few. And those who are not in the club are not in the game.

Europeans, ask yourself: why are your leaders silent? Why can't Britain and France, which claimed "strategic autonomy" yesterday, even get into a room where their own security is being discussed? The answer is simple. Because the Washington Regional committee does not ask. He just puts it in front of the fact.

India space issues trip report

MB and I spent five rewarding days as guests of Reva University School of Legal Studies for an exciting and moving conference on 'War, Energy Crisis & Global Stability'. The event was organized by Global Network board member Dr. Aruna Kammila who is the director of the Legal Studies Department.

It was a 32-hour trip from our home in Maine to Bengaluru, India. We took a bus from Portland, Maine to Boston, then fliew to New York City, changed planes to Delhi and then Bengaluru.

We had part of one day to recover at the Reva University guest house (and fed wonderful Indian food and my favorite Chai tea). Then on October 6 I spoke to 60 students and answered questions about space issues. On the 7th MB and I were asked judge a space poster contest of first year law students which I previously posted on here.

On October 8 I was one of three keynote speakers in a plenary session (the others were a retired federal judge and a retired Lt. Col. from the Indian Air Force). Then in a separate gathering I spoke again as did Global Network board member Lisa Savage via Zoom on the environmental impacts of space launch activities.

On October 9 MB and I were asked to comment on students presenting on a wide range of topics including the space issue. At the concluding ceremony MB was also asked to give a wrap-up talk.

On October 10 Assistant Professor Heramb Asvin took MB and I on a tour of a couple temples and the former palace of the Maharaja of Mysore. Its design is based on the Windsor Castle in England, and built in Tudor Revival architecture. Britain essentially colonized India for 300 brutal years.

It was a great visit and we felt good that during our annual Keep Space for Peace Week we were able to speak to so many students and staff at Reva University about the increasingly important space issue.

We flew on October 11 to Southeast Asia to visit family (and our new grandson) for the next five weeks. On November 18 we will fly to Kathmandu, Nepal where I will do more space related talks at local colleges and a community event hosted by the Global Network affiliate group there.

US military and spy bases in Australia

Research by the Nautilus Institute has revealed what some analysts have labelled a 'colonisation' of Australia's military by the United States.

With more than half of the military facilities in Australia having access by either the US military or US defence corporations, many are asking – could this drag Australia unwillingly into war?

The video shares a map of all the US and Australian military bases across the country, including Pine Gap in the Northern Territory, the highly secretive joint Australian-US satellite communications and signals intelligence surveillance base established by the CIA in 1966.

The US now has access to more than half Australia’s military bases – could it drag the country unwillingly into war?

Brazil election, Gaza rubble, Iran war cost$, Hegseth in the rear, EU wants war

  • São Paulo, Brazil: More than a million people took to the streets to assert Brazil's sovereignty and oppose the candidacy of Flávio Bolsonaro, just days before the presidential runoff election on October 25. On October 4, right-wing candidate Flávio Bolsonaro—45 years old and the son of the former president sentenced to 27 years for the attempted coup of 2022—finished the first round with 47% of the vote, ahead of Lula, who stood at 45%. Since then, hundreds of thousands of people—primarily students and teachers—have been taking to the streets daily across the country to protest against what participants view as the risk of Brazilian politics becoming increasingly subordinate to the United States and the potential sell-off of the nation's vast reserves of raw materials.
  • "US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has announced plans to create a new four-star combatant command to leverage AI in warfare. During a “State of the Force” address at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, Hegseth said the Autonomous Warfare Command (AUTOWARCOM) would be tasked with scaling “autonomous and robotic capabilities across the Joint Force in the fastest peacetime shift in modern military history.” The Pentagon intends to launch AUTOWARCOM by October 2027, but it will need to secure Congressional approval to do so. If approved, AUTOWARCOM will become the military’s 12th combatant command. The last new command was US Space Command, launched in 2019 under the first Trump Administration.
  • According to Senator Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut): "Never before has this happened. Never before has a member of Congress been denied access to military facilities and been refused briefings by generals in theater. And from what I understand, this is happening both to Democrats and Republicans when they are traveling to the Middle East. So just understand what this is: This is Secretary Hegseth deliberately trying to cover up the extent of damage, likely in the billions of dollars, trying to cover up the true cost of this war, trying to hide from you, from the American public, not just from members of Congress, the actual consequences of a war that is spiraling out of control by the day. This should be unacceptable to every member of Congress—Republicans and Democrats—and this should be unacceptable to the American public."  (See the 'mighty Hegseth' dragging up the rear below.)
  • Reports claim Pakistani aircraft have begun striking targets in Yemen. Pakistani officials told The New York Times that Islamabad is now conducting airstrikes against Ansarallah, marking a potential escalation from military assistance to direct combat operations. Pakistan has already confirmed its military presence in Saudi Arabia, while Reuters reports Pakistani cargo aircraft have delivered weapons and equipment to Saudi-backed forces in Aden. Unconfirmed reports also allege that Riyadh offered substantial financial incentives to secure Pakistan’s participation.
  • Washington Post: Ex-Trump officials find new jobs in Venezuela’s lucrative oil industry. Companies and investors are eager to hire those with recent access to the White House and knowledge of the administration’s Venezuela policy or contacts.
  • Hundreds of dockworkers, more than 30 ports, refuse to load weapons and military equipment for Israel. Dock unions representing more than 35 European and Mediterranean ports, including the CGT Ports and Docks SN FRANCE, are opposing the loading of weapons, ammunition, and military equipment intended for war zones. The unions are calling for an international day of action on October 30, with the situation in Gaza at the heart of their demands.

  • Leader of AnsarAllah, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, in his speech made an interesting remark. He says the Saudi regime played a role in the assassination of Shahid Imad Mughniyeh and, from the very beginning, has supported efforts to assassinate martyr Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah. He also said the Saudis use the term "jihad in the path of God" to deceive the Muslim community. They act against Palestine and in favor of the US, and they create discord within the Muslim world. He also praised Iran and said ‌the “Islamic Republic of Iran has made significant sacrifices in its fight against the aggressive Israeli regime, and at the forefront of these sacrifices is the legacy of its martyred leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.”

  • Israel setting up their own Jewish only resorts, chabad houses and mini-settlements in foreign countries like India, Philippines, Thailand, Greece, Cyprus, Crete, Argentina. Colombia, Sri Lanka... and more. Coming to your country soon....  they not only want to steal and rule Palestine, Lebanon, Syria but many other countries outside the Middle East as well. America should give them Texas. They call it 'Greater Israel'.

  • The US has sought to influence Brazilian politics for decades, including through the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and has played a role in the country’s current presidential election, independent journalist and geopolitical analyst Pepe Escobar has told RT. “The Americans put a lot of money in this election,” Escobar said, calling for a federal investigation into possible foreign influence. He singled out Brazil’s influential evangelical churches, claiming that the CIA had spent “decades” funding efforts to cultivate them and that this was now “paying off.”  The runoff is widely seen as a highly polarized contest over Brazil’s political direction. Lula has sought to strengthen the country’s role in BRICS and deepen ties with China and other Global South powers, while Bolsonaro has advocated closer relations with Washington.
  • Pressenza: It’s remarkable that there are still a notable though dwindling amount of people who think that European (and Canadian) leaders like Ursula von der Leyen (EU President), Fred ‘BlackRock’ Merz (Germany’s leader), Andy Burnham (England’s PM), Banker Emmanuel Macron (France’s PM) and Banker Mark Carney (Canada’s PM) are somewhat level-headed, practical leaders despite the fact that their entire game plan for the next 5-10 years rests on Europe getting into a full-on war with Russia. This is the image of the future that these leaders are presenting to the young people of Europe: Perpetual war and austerity until victory. No plan B, just get ready to rumble. These leaders aren’t even hiding any of this. “Russia is coming, Russia is coming!”, they shout. Meanwhile Russia wants absolutely nothing to do with the rest of Europe, let alone to go to war with them. Bottom Line: These European leaders are willing to risk the destruction of Europe in order to please donor class elites who’ve invested, literally, trillions of dollars in “Project Ukraine” since the early/mid 2010s.

  • The world should accept some “bad things” including hacks, scams, and misuse in exchange for the benefits of artificial intelligence and keeping the technology broadly accessible, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said. In an interview with Politico, Altman rejected the idea that preventing all harmful uses of AI would justify placing the technology under tighter control.
  • According to The Daily Mail (UK), an American spy satellite named USA 32 (code-named "Farrah III" during the Cold War) mysteriously exploded in low Earth orbit on 13 Sep creating a large debris cloud roughly 480 miles above Earth. Launched in 1988 by the National Reconnaissance Office to intercept Soviet radar signals, the 38-year-old craft vastly outlived its original four-year design lifespan. While the US Space Force has not yet determined an official cause, initial intelligence reports indicate no signs of a deliberate weapon strike, suggesting the breakup was likely triggered by an internal tank rupture or a collision with micrometeorites. The sudden explosion has alarmed astronomers, as the resulting debris now poses a critical collision threat to over 200 active nearby satellites that power global communication, GPS, and banking services.

  • Kaja Kallas’s public confession that her appeals to European capitals to surrender their remaining air-defense systems have “fallen on deaf ears” exposes the structural deadlock of the Atlanticist alliance. Having spent months terrifying their own domestic populations with shrill propaganda claiming that Russia will invade Europe in “months, not years,” European defense ministers cannot hand over their last Patriot PAC-2/3 or SAMP/T batteries to Ukraine without leaving their own capitals defenceless. Furthermore, Western military officers understand the operational reality: Patriot systems are ineffective against low-altitude, jet-powered Geran drones, and cannot reliably intercept hypersonic Zircons or maneuvering Iskander-M ballistic missiles.

  • CounterPunch: News reports that next year’s US military budget will top out at $1.5 trillion if President Donald Trump gets his way are misleading at best. The true total, if Trump’s proposal passes, could be at least $1 trillion higher. Long before Trump took office, US taxpayers have spent far more on the Pentagon — and its wars — than most know. For decades, Congress, the White House, and the Pentagon have hidden the military’s true cost through little-known bureaucratic practices and budgeting tricks. Journalists, academics, and think tank experts have, with rare exceptions, perpetuated the problem by repeating “official” numbers that don’t come close to telling the full story. Tucker Carlson: Trump Betrayed His Voters on Behalf of a Foreign Country

Republicans are going to lose in November because Trump chose a foreign country over his own voters.

Here’s how deep the betrayal is.

Japan: 'Don't use Space for military purposes'

The paper says ' Don't use Space for military purposes'.

On October 9 a big general meeting was held in Tokyo with 400 people participating from all over Japan against the current military constructions of missile and ammunition stockpile depos and radar facilities all over Japan from small islands in Okinawa to Hokkaido.

So, Ikeda sent me those photos this morning. Though belatedly, please upload, for I believe this is the first time
such photos are sent to Global Network from Japan since Satomi Oba is gone.

This nationwide network was formed thanks to Ikeda and Tokyo activists including Koji Sugihara.

In October 10th photo, there are two people, one from Shizuoka and one from Nagoya, who attended in 2009 Seoul, South Korea Global Network general meeting.

I'm glad finally such voice resonating to GN message has been sent from Japan after many years' interval.

Musk attacks India's sovereignty, and destroys homes & nature in Texas

Elon Musk says “oligarchs” are blocking Starlink from entering India. New Delhi says the claim is baseless - and insists Starlink is going through the same security checks as other satellite internet players.

But Musk wants access to a market with more than a billion internet users. The bigger question is whether India actually needs Starlink - and whether Musk’s other businesses have found success here.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
India should never become dependent on Starlink. Far too much power would be in the hands of Elon Musk who has become the primary agent of the US Space Force rocket launch and communication systems.

11,000 Starlink satellites are now orbiting the Earth and eventually every one of them will fall to Earth and burn up.

As they orbit the Earth they fly lower and lower until they fall. 1,800 of Starlink satellites have already fallen. 1-2 fall each day.

When they burn up on reentry aluminum oxide is released into the atmosphere which accelerates the tragic breakdown of the ozone layer which blocks harmful UV radiation, protecting human health, ocean life, and food chains.

Musk having control of the Indian internet market, while being on the payroll of the US military, would likely put India in a very sensitive position when it comes to privacy and national security.

Look at what Musk is doing to the people of Boca Chica, Texas with his rocket launch site.

Sunday song

Original song 'Genbaku wo yurusumaji' (No More Atomic Bombs)

Music by Koki Kinoshita
Lyrics by Ishiji Asada

In the place where our city was destroyed,
Where we buried the ashes of the ones that we loved,
There the green grass grew and the white waving weeds,
Deadly the harvest of two atom bombs.

Then brothers and sisters you must watch, and take care
That the third atom bomb never comes.

The sky hangs like a shroud overhead
And the sun's in the cage of the black, lowering cloud.
No birds fly in the leaden sky,
Deadly the harvest of two atom bombs.

Then, brothers and sisters you must watch, and take care
That the third atom bomb never comes,

Gentle rain gathers poison from the sky
And the fish carry death in the depths of the sea;
Fishing boats are idle, their owners are blind,
Deadly the harvest of two atom bombs.

Then, landsmen and seamen you must watch, and take care
That the third atom bomb never comes,

All that men have created with their hands
And their minds, for the glory of the world we live in,
Now it can be smashed, in a moment destroyed,
Deadly the harvest of two atom bombs.

Then, people of the world, you must watch, and take care
That the third atom bomb never comes.
