👉 The American soybean harvest should be a season of relief and reward — but this year, the fields are full, and the buyers are gone. Under President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff policies, China — once the largest buyer of U.S. soybeans — has walked away completely. In 2024, soybeans were America’s second-largest export, worth nearly $25 billion, with China accounting for more than half. But now? Zero sales. China has turned to Argentina, buying 7 million metric tons of soybeans — about a quarter of Argentina’s crop — just as the U.S. harvest began.
And here’s the twist: while China cut a major deal with Buenos Aires, Trump met with Argentine President Javier Milei at the U.N., offering “full support” for his political future. Within 24 hours, Washington announced a $20 billion bailout for Argentina — the same country that just undercut U.S. farmers on the world market.
American soybean growers are furious. Farm bankruptcies are at a five-year high, rural incomes are collapsing, and U.S. agricultural exports have plunged under the weight of tariffs and retaliatory trade barriers. Yet Trump’s administration appears more focused on propping up a foreign ally than fixing the damage at home.
Meanwhile, nations like Brazil and Argentina are thriving, filling the global demand for soy, beef, pork, and cotton that once belonged to the United States. The U.S. Department of Agriculture now projects a widening agricultural trade deficit — the first in decades — while avoiding public discussion of how tariffs have gutted exports.
So what does all this mean for America’s farmers — and for the “America First” trade agenda? Has Trump’s strategy backfired, turning a promise of economic strength into a crisis of dependency and foreign influence?
Statement: Jeju Rally for Palestinian Liberation and Solidarity with Haecho and the Humanitarian Flotilla Peace Activists
“I’ve learned that crossing the borderless sea can break blockades and forge solidarity and connection. Meeting across barriers, shattering blockades—that is the purpose of this voyage.” (From a letter by Haecho, ahead of her Gaza voyage).
On Wed., Oct. 8, at 11:40 AM, Haecho’s boat, the ‘Alaa Al-Najjar’ was seized. Around the same time, all nine ships of the ‘Thousand Madleens to Gaza’ humanitarian flotilla were seized by Israeli forces. All activists, journalists, and medical personnel aboard the flotilla were arrested and detained in an Israeli desert security prison. Two days later, on Oct. 10, Haecho was released under voluntary deportation and, as she said, she is returning to us. However, our demand has been not only Haecho's release but also the safe and swift release of all activists from the flotilla.
The Lee Jae-myung administration has worked to secure the release of their citizen Haecho. But that alone is not enough. South Korea remains among the 35 countries out of 193 worldwide that still do not recognize Palestine as a state. Korean companies like Hanwha, Samsung, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), and HD Hyundai are collaborating with Israeli firms and contributing to the genocide of Palestine. Korea National Oil Corporation is also involved in securing exploration rights for Gaza Strip gas fields. The Lee Jae-myung administration must not only strongly condemn the Israeli government’s blatant disregard of international law and the illegal abduction of its own citizen, but also signal the possibility of halting cooperation with Israel. The Colombian government has ordered the expulsion of Israeli diplomats and terminated its free trade agreement with Israel. The Turkish prosecutor's office has expressed its intent to investigate whether Israel violated international law by arresting over 20 Turkish citizens, specifically regarding deprivation of liberty and seizure of means of transport. The UN has already defined Israel's attack on the Gaza Strip as genocide on Sept. 16.
According to accounts from activists released from Israeli prisons, including those aboard the ‘Global Sumud Flotilla,’ they were denied water and food, subjected to beatings, sexual harassment, psychological terror, threats, and other forms of abuse and torture. Their testimonies demand that we, the international community, finally heed Palestine's long-neglected suffering and its yearning for independence, liberation, and peace. Even before this, over 11,100 Palestinians have been detained by Israel under the pretext of ‘security,’ and they have suffered abuse and torture. During their decades of imprisonment, they would have had to endure the noise of fighter jets bombing Gaza. Those whom the Israeli government labels ‘terrorists’ are those fighting for Palestine's independence and liberation. They are people who stand against imperialist siege, blockade, and extermination policies. They are people who stand for the survival of non-humans who don’t have a voice.
Jeju was no different. After liberation in 1945, independence and liberation were thwarted by the US military government. Branded a ‘Red Island,’ it became a target of imperialist massacre. Young people died under detention and torture, and 84 villages were ‘erased’ in scorched-earth operations. Those who survived the massacres became bereaved families, yet even speaking was ‘blocked’ and ‘blockaded,’ leaving them unable to dream of ‘connection.’ Jeju was another Palestine, and Palestine is another Jeju.
Yet Jeju is becoming an island that exacerbates the threat of war due to the naval base and aerospace facilities. Warships depart from the Jeju Naval Base in Gangjeong Village to conduct war exercises on the high seas, while American strategic bombers fly over the high seas south of Jeju. There has been talk of building runways usable by U.S. strategic bombers if the Jeju Second Airport is built. Hanwha Systems, which collaborates with Israeli arms companies, is nearing completion of a space center in Jeju's special groundwater management zone in the central mountain area, where it will produce satellites that will become eyes and ears for war.
In this situation, a peace activist departed from Gangjeong to “break through the blockade imposed by capital and military might through the solidarity of countless people.” And she is now returning to us, her final destination. Hundreds of peace activists from around the world sailed to Gaza carrying humanity's collective yearning for peace, seeking solidarity and connection, and they exposed the reality there. Now it is our turn to respond.

Mary Beth and I spent two hours on Saturday carrying our signs through the enormous No Kings rally crowd in Brunswick, Maine. I'd guess the number was 1-2 thousand people. They were lined up for a couple blocks on both sides of Maine Street and pretty much filled up the town green.
The Democrat party run event had no sound system and without fail did no serious education of their voting base who showed up for the event. It felt more like a 'happening', a party, a festival, a circus. A campaign event.
MB and I repeatedly walked threw the crowd with our signs and I'd say I got about 30 friendly nods - and only a few positive comments. I handed out a couple dozen mini-flyers about Palestine. Most of the nods were sort of given to me in a quiet way - as if not wishing anyone else to notice.
But the sneers and turning away as I passed were much more frequent from people who clearly did not approve of my sign's message which was 'Stop funding Israeli terrorism'. How could any living human being these days deny that Israel's genocide in Gaza and the West Bank is not terrorism?
One local woman courageously stood by the gazebo in the park and chanted the messages on a couple of the Palestine solidarity signs that were being held from the gazebo. Two of the Democrat organizers came up to her and told her to stop - that she was not allowed to chant. The chanting woman asked 'Wasn't freedom of speech one of the goals of the protest'? Apparently the Dems ignored the question.
During our time wandering thru the crowd with our signs I saw only two other signs that had a foreign policy link and they both were supporting the US proxy war by Ukraine aimed at Russia. Otherwise, I saw nothing to do with Washington's $1 trillion a year war machine which now appears to be getting ready to attack Venezuela.
My opinion of the No Kings events is they don't actually intend to address serious current issues. These rallies are preparation for the 2026 Congressional elections. (While walking thru the crowd I ran headlong into our Democrat Congressional Rep. Chellie Pingree.)
The Dems are charging up their base, raising alot of money online from them, with the hope they can take back the Senate and House of Representatives. If the Dems can pull that off it will be back to 'business as usual' and the once agitated base will fall back into their usual slumbers. The war spending will continue along with cuts in social programs and civil liberties attacks. Both parties are corporate controlled.
It's a sad state of affairs politically across the nation. No real debate about Pentagon spending, foreign endless war$, surveillance society, digital economy, and much more - all left to be discussed by those on the fringes.
It was mostly an older crowd. Some younger people, who tend to care more about the topics I just mentioned, were indeed present but in much smaller numbers and few if any were taking on tough issues with their signs.

Kishore Mahbubani is a Singaporean diplomat who has served for ten years as as ambassador to the United Nations. His talks about global policies and their development are always of interest.
His most recent one under the question “What will geopolitics look like in the next ten years?” is no exception.
The most important part starts [in above video] at 22:54 min. Here I am mostly interested in what Mahbubani has to say about Europe (edited machine transcript):
I want to emphasize that the in current situation the key word you got to understand is complexity. [The world] is extremely complex because there are a lot of moving parts all the time. So for a start clearly and at the at the highest strategic level as you know in the cold war was bipolar the cold war ended and it became unipolar. And now we have what you have a strange combination of both a bipolar and multipolar world.
[…]
But there are also other powers [besides the U.S., China and India] that are clearly changing the situation.
Again, clearly Russia matters, right? And the biggest strategic mistake that the Europeans made in dealing with Russia is that they only look at the size of its economy and didn’t look at the overall national strength and their military capability.
So the Ukraine war could have been avoided if the Europeans had just shown some degree of respect for Russia’s own long-term strategic interests. And the tragedy of the Europeans trying to punish the rest of the world for buying Russian oil is that they could have avoided this war with Russia if they had shown some strategic common sense in dealing with Russia.
He later blames the mistake on the serious lack of abilities of the current crop of European leaders:
So all that is what I mean with complexity. It is not a simple black and white chessboard, you know, it’s extremely complex and you got to watch all the moving parts.
The people who can get the big picture are the ones who will succeed and thrive and those who don’t, like the Europeans, sadly .... The Europeans live in a delusionary world, and I mean that quite seriously because they, you know if you just look at the photograph of the European leaders sitting on sofas in front of the school teacher Donald Trump at his desk lecturing these European leaders. They look like school children. I mean the optics itself captured what had happened.
And for a respected prime minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte, whom I met, who is a very thoughtful intelligent guy by the way, for him to call Trump daddy? I mean it shows you that something has gone wrong.
So this actually I must tell you: In my last conversation with Kissinger he told me candidly that the quality of mind of these Europeans has gone down so much they don’t understand how much the world has changed. So this is an example of where – if you understand the world you can navigate through it, but if you don’t understand the world, like the Europeans, they seem to be in trouble.
Mahbubani diagnosis of Europe’s disease is in my view correct. But what might be the best therapy to correct this situation?

Israel has never signed an agreement that it has not reneged on. The sham of the Gaza ceasefire is no different. Within the first 24 hours of the ceasefire going into effect, the Israelis killed 35 civilians and injured 72 others. At least nine civilians were killed and a further 35 injured within just the past 24 hours, according to the figures released by the Gaza Health Ministry on Wednesday. Five were killed in a drone strike in the Shuja’iyya neighbourhood while additional strikes in Jabalia in the north and Khan Yunis and Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip resulted in further casualties. Ceasefire or no ceasefire, the killings have continued.
A recent video from Rajghat made headlines when the police tried to remove an elderly man fasting in solidarity with Gaza. That man was former IIT professor VK Tripathi. When an officer asked why Gaza mattered to him, he replied: “You are a human being first, inspector later.”
It was just a glimpse into a fight he has carried on for three decades. The 1990 Bhagalpur riots, he recalled, shook him so deeply that he left a teaching career in the US and returned to India to create a public response to the politics of hate based on Gandhian non-violence. Since then, he has travelled neighbourhoods and campuses, challenging communal politics with dialogue, leaflets, and sheer persistence.
Newslaundry walked with Tripathi through Delhi’s streets as he handed out pamphlets, stopped strangers for a conversation, and tried – patiently, sometimes in vain – to convince them why they must not turn a blind eye to the human suffering in Gaza. Many brushed him off, others argued back, a few listened. But he finds hope even when just “5 percent” of the people he has reached out to understand.
He warns that India’s most vulnerable are now easy prey for political exploitation, that caste bias still corrodes even elite institutions like the IITs, and that sectarian control over temples is not just a theft of religion but of humanity itself. Yet his faith endures.
Despite rejection and ridicule, Tripathi believes young people still carry the capacity to choose empathy over hate. And so, he walks on, repeating his message with quiet conviction: “India is still alive.”
