It was a damp, cold and gray day in the former mill town of Saco, Maine yesterday as 25 people from across the state came to the protest. Saco is home to the General Dynamics bomb plant where the guidance systems for the bombs the US provides to Israel dropped on Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Qatar and Iran are made.
People held signs about Palestine, Venezuela and ICE as cars zoomed by on this busy road linking the north and south of the state. The vigorous honking was one of the best responses I believe we've had yet during our three years of monthly protests in different communities across Maine. Was it because of the ICE killing of a mother in Minnesota while in her car? I'd say it was a key factor.
But we can't discount the outrage across our nation of Trump's illegal and immoral attack on Venezuela and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores (who was severely beaten).
Trump ran for prez on the promise to end the Democrats' wars and regime change operations. But during the last year we have witnessed repeated violations of these promises. At the same time life in this country deteriorates with neither political party doing a damn thing to address the mounting economic collapse.
And on top of that Trump has announced that in 2027 he intends to up the Pentagon budget to $1.5 trillion - an all-time high. It's criminal!
That's why we had two 'Bring Our War $$ Home' banners with us yesterday which also helped elicit the strong response from passing vehicles.
Our closing circle was one of the best we've had as we passed our megaphone around and invited everyone to express what was in their heart. Folks really appreciated the chance to be together and to share their outrage, fears and determination to keep organizing against this run-a-way imperial madness by the USA.
Our next monthly protest will be held in Brunswick on Saturday, March 7 at 1:30 pm.
