Revisiting the House of Peace

On Friday Mary Beth and I drove to Ipswich, Massachusetts for an overnight visit with friends John and Carrie who run the House of Peace.

John and Carrie Schuchardt co-founded The House of Peace in 1990. During these 33 years the House of Peace has welcomed more than 500 refugees from 30 countries, including Haiti, El Salvador, Vietnam, Cuba, Ethiopia, Eritrea, the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, the Congo, and Syria. Also during these years war burned and maimed children have stayed at the House of Peace while they were able to receive treatment from Boston-area hospitals.

While we were there for this visit they had a program about El Salvador and the terrible conditions that country is currently experiencing. We met one man who came to the House of Peace as a refugee in the 1980's from El Salvador and lived with Carrie and John for three years though high school. He had some sad stories to tell. The featured speaker was a woman from El Salvador whose mother long ago founded a human rights organization which she now runs.
