At the exact same time that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was publicly slamming Democrats for their call for a timeline for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, he was privately begging President George W. Bush to bring some troops home in hopes of retaining control of the U.S. Congress in the days before the 2006 midterm elections.
This has come to light via a passage in Bush's new book, Decision Points. McConnell has not denied the allegation, and the Senator's hometown paper, the Louisville Courier-Journal, decries the story as "contemptible hypocrisy and obsessive partisanship that have come to mark the senator's time in office."
It goes to show that the peace movement was having a major impact on the national scene at that time. Should we not take that as an indication that our movement should re-engage and push harder now to Bring Our War $$ Home?
They sneer to their tame press that the Peace Movement is of no consequence, that we make no difference,
ReplyDeleteBut they spend a lot of time, money and political capital to actively suppress any dissent. In University Park while George W and his trusted accomplices "Duck!" Cheney and Condescendingly-sleezy Rice were shoveling dirt (ground breaking) and shoveling the crap, unarmed peaceful protesters were ringed by Dallas County Sheriffs SWAT team wearing bulletproof vests and packing machine guns, poison gas, and torture weapons to make sure they didn't get within camera range of the Tame Press Acolytes,
The protesters included people who are members (unlike Bush) of the United Methodist Church, and (unlike Bush) have a legitimate claim of ownership at SMU. Bush was celebrating his victory over the congregations and Bishops in building an idolatrous Temple to himself on Church property.
Christ drove the moneychangers from the Temple with a whip of ropes, Bush and the other moneychangers bought the Temple, with other people's money, and drove Christ out with whips braided from dollar bills soaked in the blood of children.
But it's that ring of SWAT officers surrounding the protesters that shows most fully their hypocrisy, actually an outright LIE, of insisting that the Peace Movement doesn't affect them.
