More Greece Analysis

Quagmire and fiasco are only two words to describe the condition of the European Union and the eurozone after the democratic choice of the Greek people.

CrossTalking with Joshua Tartakovsky, John Laughland, and Theofanis Exadaktylos.

Financial Totalitarianism in Europe

Left and right wings in European Parliament condemn the EU banksterism system.  European countries are being hollowed out (Greece, Italy, Spain, Ireland and more) in order for the corporate run IMF-World Bank to flourish.

Prof Michel Chossudovsky in Canada writes:

After having launched a Referendum to refute and refuse the debt bailout agreement put together by the Troika, Prime Minister Tsipras together with his newly instated Finance Minister, comes up four days latter with an austerity package broadly similar to the one which was turned down by the Greek government in June.

This about-turn had been carefully engineered. The Greek people were misled and deceived.

Tsipras had made a deal with the creditors. He was in favor of accepting the demands of the creditors all along.

Tsipras led the “NO” campaign while having already decided that in the wake of the Referendum, he would say YES to the creditors and cave in to their demands. This is tantamount to an Act of Treason.

By Thursday, a document of 13-pages containing concrete reforms and austerity measures was sent to the Troika. The initiative was intended, according to media reports  ”to act as a foundation to free up a new three-year, 53.5-billion euro bailout package to save the nation from bankruptcy”.

These proposals outlined in the 13 page document spell disaster for Greece.

They involve massive tax hikes, a drastic reduction in public sector wages, cuts in pensions including an increase in the retirement age to 67, the privatization of state assets including public utilities and infrastructure: “The government will look at selling off state assets and will get the ball rolling on privatizing the electricity grid company, regional airports and ports including Pireaus and Thessaloniki.”

See the full story here

To me this looks like a system of global poverty, unemployment, servility, and slavery being set up by the banksters.  Who is moving to control the food and water?  (Monsanto and Nestle for example.) The US is next up - just listen to presidential candidate Jeb Bush talking about people needing to work longer hours and moving retirement age to 70.  (Hillary Clinton will be our version of Greece's Tsipras to talk a good game but sell us out in the end.) The rich want it all and it appears that the Greek government has surrendered under the pressure.  Just imagine the heart break of the 61% of Greek citizens who voted NO.

Creating Their Own Future

Many businesses are facing closure in the Greek port of Thessaloniki because they're either not being paid - or they can't pay their bills. It's one of the ports which could be privatized under the government plan. Hoda Abdel-Hamid has been meeting workers there who have taken control of their own future.

Iran Deal Uncertainty

The U.S. and Iran appear to be on the cusp of a historic deal which could end decades of animosities and ensure a nuclear weapons-free Iran. But with political forces mobilizing on Capitol Hill to torpedo the deal, and both sides pushing for last-minute concessions, the likelihood of a breakthrough remains unclear.

Does President Obama have enough political capital to ensure the sustainability of an eventual deal, and what are the broader geopolitical implications of the agreement? Oksana is joined by Trita Parsi, the President of the National American Iranian Council, to analyse these issues.

If the nuclear negotiations are stalled or significantly delayed, Iran will be unable to get sanctions relief allowing it to ramp up its oil exports in the coming months.

Markets have been concerned that a fresh oil supply from Iran could add to global oversupply and push down prices further.

A further fall in oil prices would result in a recession in US shale; it wouldn’t be cost-effective to invest in shale, that’s how the market self-regulates, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov told RT on Thursday.

Talking Drones & Navy Airshow in Brunswick

A US military drone visited 'Brunswick Landing' several years ago.  There have long been rumors that drones might some day be a key part of the operation at the former Navy base in Brunswick, Maine

Report on PeaceWorks/VFP Meeting with MRRA about Upcoming Airshow September 5-6

On July 8 three members of PeaceWorks and Maine Veterans for Peace- VFP (Rosie Tyler Paul, Dan Ellis & Bruce Gagnon) met with three representatives from the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority (MRRA)  – the quasi-government agency empowered to turn the former Brunswick Naval Air Station into “Brunswick Landing: Maine’s Center for Innovation”’.
Meeting with us from the MRRA were Steve Levesque, Executive Director; Marty McMahon, Aviation Services Director; and Ben Sturtevant, Communications Coordinator.
The purpose of the meeting (requested by the peace groups) was to find out more about military/aerospace production either currently underway or planned at Brunswick Landing.  In addition we wished to speak out strongly against the planned Navy Blue Angels airshow scheduled for September 5-6.
Rosie began the meeting asking about the MRRA vision for the “Center for Innovation”.  Levesque outlined their present plan to develop renewable energy, create “Tech Place”, composites, bio-research, conservation areas, and whatever else they can attract including more aerospace/military production.
Levesque said they presently have 72 companies doing business at Brunswick Landing – and acknowledged that two of these companies - Tempus Jets and Maine Tool & Machine currently have some level of military contracts.  He refused to elaborate on what they actually do for the military.
Upon questioning about drone technology being a possibility at Brunswick Landing Levesque stated that they would love to have drone development going on there.  “Our board is not putting blockage on any military project – drones may in the future be developed here,” Levesque said. (He also mentioned that one of the companies now at Brunswick Landing was starting to work on drone technology which could be used for either civilian or military purposes but did not say any more than that.)
The Bangor Daily News has in the past quoted Levesque on this subject of military production:
He added that along with projects that include a tentative $1 billion contract announced by Pratt & Whitney in August to build engines for war planes [in Berwick] for the Department of Defense, “Maine is really starting to show itself in respect to being a good place for the aerospace industry. It’s good for us at Brunswick Landing, but this is great for Maine because there are going to be huge spin-offs in the supply chain. There’s going to be a need for people who do interior work, customization, machine shops. All those folks are going to benefit from having this kind of company here.”
I found nothing while searching the Internet about what military projects Tempus Jets and Maine Tool & Machine are currently doing at Brunswick Landing.  (Tempus Jets has entered a Joint Venture Agreement with the Kingdom of Bahrain which may or may not be of interest.  Tempus Jets operates an expansive aircraft maintenance, modification and interior completion facility in Brunswick.)  An Internet search did though turn up an interesting series of reviews about the company at http://www.indeed.com/cmp/Tempus-Jets/reviews
Next in the meeting we talked about the upcoming airshow with Rosalie reminding the MRRA representatives that we firmly believe these airshows are ultimately expensive and highly polluting military recruiting gimmicks.  Without hesitation Levesque admitted that “Recruiting was the primary purpose” of the airshows.  “I think you are right.  The Blue Angels are a recruitment tool for the Navy and Marine Corps.  We are OK with recruitment.  Some of us feel we need a strong military to protect your right to protest,” he said.
We asked about the front-page local newspaper photo three years ago where burning napalm was shown being simulated along the flight line during the airshow.  We made the point that this had nothing to do with the “celebration of aviation”’ that he had earlier referred to and was indeed a gross example of war and violence promotion.  Levesque went on to correct us, saying that the photo was misreported in the local newspaper – it was not napalm being simulated but was in fact simulating exploding bombs.
At this point in the meeting Dan asked if either of the other two men in the meeting would comment on this but they both refused after Levesque reminded us that “They both work for me.”
We made the point that airshows are a terrible noise maker that many in the community don’t like. Fundamentally these airshows are terribly polluting – especially bad during this time as we reflect on what our local communities can do to help deal with the coming ravages of climate change.  We reminded the MRRA representatives that the Pentagon is the largest polluter on the planet.
The meeting concluded with us reminding the MRRA that VFP and PeaceWorks will be organizing a protest during the September 5-6 airshow.

Deadly Nuclear Legacy

A huge legacy of the cold war hulks on the shores of Enewetak atoll in the south Pacific: the Runit Dome, housing 111,000 cubic yards of radioactive debris left behind after 12 years of US nuclear tests. According to a report by the US Department of Energy, soil around the dome is already more contaminated than its contents. Now locals, scientists and environmental activists fear that a storm surge, typhoon or other cataclysmic event brought on by climate change could tear the concrete structure wide open, releasing its contents into the ocean.

Hedges on Sanders

On Reality Asserts Itself, Chris Hedges and Paul Jay discuss the role of violence in revolution and the Bernie Sanders campaign.  The comments on Sanders begin at 16 minutes into the video.  Worth watching.

The Global Fiscal Mess

There are several important variables to the Greek debt crisis that most people aren't talking about.

The Secret Plans...I'm Still Waiting

It's been interesting to see the response to my blog post about the Bernie Sanders campaign rally on Monday in Portland.  Counterpunch posted it on their site which dramatically increased readership and debate around the growing critique of the Sanders campaign.  We've had a bunch of really great comments here on this blog as well.  As I told one woman on Fazebook who complained about my article.... "Democracy can be a real pain."  Many would rather we just fall in line without question.

I tried doing that when I was a Young Republican who joined the Air Force during the Vietnam War.  I blindly followed the crowd during the Jimmy Carter campaign for president when he said, "The arms race is a disgrace to the human race" and went on to build the Kings Bay nuclear submarine base in St. Marys, Georgia once elected.  I've tried to learn over the years to separate wheat from chaff. (I also fell for Nixon's 'secret plan' to end the Vietnam War during the 1968 campaign.)

One man criticized me for expecting Sanders to have spoken about such "narrow interests" during his Portland speech.  Narrow interests?  US foreign and military policy which eats up 55% of every discretionary tax dollar - US military empire with more than 800 bases around the world - endless US war making on behalf of corporate interests - the Pentagon with the planet's largest carbon bootprint - all narrow interests!  Excuse me while I faint from lack of oxygen!

One person suggested that Sanders was just holding back - waiting for the right time to spring his opposition to the US military empire on the unsuspecting corporate oligarchy that he acknowledges runs the show in Washington.  I've heard similar talk about Obama for years - he has a secret plan in his second term to do all the progressive things he promised during his previous two campaigns.  Now that the clock is running out on the Obama administration he must be waiting until the last couple of weeks to unpack the 'secret plan' for us.  Similarly, I suppose, we should all be patient and wait for Bernie to offer his 'secret plan' to pay for all his social spending promises.

You see my big problem is that I bought the 'democracy line' fed to me during my early days attending military run schools on Air Force bases.  I still believe that citizens should be well informed, they should ask candidates critical questions about policies (especially if they are not being articulated during campaigns), and that we should have healthy (stimulating and non-violent) public debate with one another during campaigns which results in better education and politics for all of us. Democracy is supposed to be active not passive.

But sadly in our consumer oriented society we been taught to open our mouths, tilt our heads back, (yes like a little birdie in a nest) and take the worm that is handed to us from on high.  Many, many Americans have learned to do politics this way - take what the corporate media and the well paid Madison Avenue public relations teams feed us as the gospel truth and then go and spit it back out to our fellow citizens.

Like some others I now choose to do things a bit differently.  I will ask questions, expect reasonable answers, and then I can sit down and do some deep thinking about what I have heard.  I might even write a few blog posts to see what reaction I get to my own analysis.  That to me is what real democracy looks like.

Ukraine Merges Nazis and Islamists

By Robert Parry

In a curiously upbeat account, The New York Times reports that Islamic militants have joined with Ukraine’s far-right and neo-Nazi battalions to fight ethnic Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine. It appears that no combination of violent extremists is too wretched to celebrate as long as they’re killing Russ-kies.

The article by Andrew E. Kramer reports that there are now three Islamic battalions “deployed to the hottest zones,” such as around the port city of Mariupol. One of the battalions is headed by a former Chechen warlord who goes by the name “Muslim,” Kramer wrote, adding:

“The Chechen commands the Sheikh Mansur group, named for an 18th-century Chechen resistance figure. It is subordinate to the nationalist Right Sector, a Ukrainian militia. … Right Sector … formed during last year’s street protests in Kiev from a half-dozen fringe Ukrainian nationalist groups like White Hammer and the Trident of Stepan Bandera.

“Another, the Azov group, is openly neo-Nazi, using the ‘Wolf’s Hook’ symbol associated with the [Nazi] SS. Without addressing the issue of the Nazi symbol, the Chechen said he got along well with the nationalists because, like him, they loved their homeland and hated the Russians.”

As casually as Kramer acknowledges the key front-line role of neo-Nazis and white supremacists fighting for the U.S.-backed Kiev regime, his article does mark an aberration for the Times and the rest of the mainstream U.S. news media, which usually dismiss any mention of this Nazi taint as “Russian propaganda.”

During the February 2014 coup that ousted elected President Viktor Yanukovych, the late fascist Stepan Bandera was one of the Ukrainian icons celebrated by the Maidan protesters. During World War II, Bandera headed the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists-B, a radical paramilitary movement that sought to transform Ukraine into a racially pure state. At times coordinating with Adolf Hitler’s SS, OUN-B took part in the expulsion and extermination of tens of thousands of Jews and Poles.

Though most of the Maidan protesters in 2013-14 appeared motivated by anger over political corruption and by a desire to join the European Union, neo-Nazis made up a significant number and spearheaded much of the violence against the police. Storm troopers from the Right Sektor and Svoboda party seized government buildings and decked them out with Nazi insignias and a Confederate battle flag, the universal symbol of white supremacy.

Then, as the protests turned bloodier from Feb. 20-22, the neo-Nazis surged to the forefront. Their well-trained militias, organized in 100-man brigades called “sotins” or “the hundreds,” led the final assaults against police and forced Yanukovych and many of his officials to flee for their lives.

In the days after the coup, as the neo-Nazi militias effectively controlled the government, European and U.S. diplomats scrambled to help the shaken parliament put together the semblance of a respectable regime, although four ministries, including national security, were awarded to the right-wing extremists in recognition of their crucial role in ousting Yanukovych.

At that point, virtually the entire U.S. news media put on blinders about the neo-Nazi role, all the better to sell the coup to the American public as an inspirational story of reform-minded “freedom fighters” standing up to “Russian aggression.” The U.S. media delicately stepped around the neo-Nazi reality by keeping out relevant context, such as the background of national security chief Andriy Parubiy, who founded the Social-National Party of Ukraine in 1991, blending radical Ukrainian nationalism with neo-Nazi symbols. Parubiy was commandant of the Maidan’s “self-defense forces.”

Barbarians at the Gate

At times, the mainstream media’s black-out of the brown shirts was almost comical. Last February, almost a year after the coup, a New York Times article about the government’s defenders of Mariupol hailed the crucial  role played by the Azov battalion but managed to avoid noting its well-documented Nazi connections.

That article by Rick Lyman presented the situation in Mariupol as if the advance by ethnic Russian rebels amounted to the barbarians at the gate while the inhabitants were being bravely defended by the forces of civilization, the Azov battalion. In such an inspirational context, it presumably wasn’t considered appropriate to mention the Swastikas and SS markings.

Now, the Kiev regime has added to those “forces of civilization” — resisting the Russ-kie barbarians — Islamic militants with ties to terrorism. Last September, Marcin Mamon, a reporter for the Intercept, reached a vanguard group of these Islamic fighters in Ukraine through the help of his “contact in Turkey with the Islamic State [who] had told me his ‘brothers’ were in Ukraine, and I could trust them.”

The new Times article avoids delving into the terrorist connections of these Islamist fighters. But Kramer does bluntly acknowledge the Nazi truth about the Azov fighters. He also notes that American military advisers in Ukraine “are specifically prohibited from giving instruction to members of the Azov group.”

While the U.S. advisers are under orders to keep their distance from the neo-Nazis, the Kiev regime is quite open about its approval of the central military role played by these extremists – whether neo-Nazis, white supremacists or Islamic militants. These extremists are considered very aggressive and effective in killing ethnic Russians.

The regime has shown little concern about widespread reports of “death squad” operations targeting suspected pro-Russian sympathizers in government-controlled towns. But such human rights violations should come as no surprise given the Nazi heritage of these units and the connection of the Islamic militants to hyper-violent terrorist movements in the Middle East.

But the Times treats this lethal mixture of neo-Nazis and Islamic extremists as a good thing. After all, they are targeting opponents of the “white-hatted” Kiev regime, while the ethnic Russian rebels and the Russian government wear the “black hats.”

As an example of that tone, Kramer wrote:

“Even for Ukrainians hardened by more than a year of war here against Russian-backed separatists, the appearance of Islamic combatants, mostly Chechens, in towns near the front lines comes as something of a surprise — and for many of the Ukrainians, a welcome one. … Anticipating an attack in the coming months, the Ukrainians are happy for all the help they can get.”

So, the underlying message seems to be that it’s time for the American people and the European public to step up their financial and military support for a Ukrainian regime that has unleashed on ethnic Russians a combined force of Nazis, white supremacists and Islamic militants (considered “brothers” of the Islamic State).

Ukraine a Trigger for War with Russia?

Our Night with Bernie

I spent two hours yesterday holding a banner (joined by eight others with signs and a 2nd banner) outside the Bernie Sanders for President rally in Portland, Maine that reportedly drew about 9,000 people.  It was an impressive crowd for someone who once claimed he was a 'socialist'.

People began lining up before 5:00 pm for the 7:00 event and during those two hours I kept a steady stream of requests going to folks as they entered the Portland Civic Center.  I suggested to eager Sanders supporters, "Please ask Bernie his position on the $1.2 trillion F-35 fighter plane project.  Ask him if it is true that he has lobbied to bring the plane to Vermont?"

I suggested to the excited crowd, with many young people in line, that they might ask Sanders, "His position on NATO expansion up to Russia's border - can we really afford war with Russia?"

"Informed citizens need to know the answers to Bernie's foreign policy - he's not talking about these issues," I said.

Once the line had ended I folded up my banner and made a dash inside just as the rally was starting.  All seats in the arena were taken and the entry onto the floor was blocked but I wedged my way down onto the hockey stadium floor within 25 feet of the stage that Sanders was speaking from.  The candidate was getting huge applause as he took on Wall St, the Koch brothers, income inequality and the like.  He touched on all the traditional progressive buttons just like I'd heard Jesse Jackson, Ralph Nader, and Dennis Kucinich do in the past. Women's issues, single-payer health care, student loans hitting young people, and more were addressed.  Sanders called for free college tuition for all.  He wants to create millions of new jobs.  He talked about fixing our neglected and broken infrastructure.  He hit hard on climate change calling for a sustainable society.

It was when he mentioned climate change that I figured he had to talk about the military industrial complex, because after all that is the pot of gold that has to be tapped in order to pay for building the new vision of America that Bernie so eloquently laid out.  But nothing was said about the metastasizing Pentagon budget nor a mumbling word was spoken about foreign policy.  Nothing about Russia (Sanders does support sanctions on Moscow), nothing about NATO expansion, nothing about Israel's brutal attacks on Gaza (Sanders has publicly supported Tel Aviv's attacks on Palestinians), nothing about negotiations with Iran, nothing about waste, fraud, abuse at the Pentagon, nothing about our endless wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Ukraine, etc, and nothing about conversion of the military industrial complex to peaceful production.

After making many social program promises the only thing Bernie mentioned as a way to pay for all of this was a tax on "Wall Street speculation" which of course got a big cheer.

I really didn't disagree with anything in Bernie's speech last night.  He is adept at pulling all the right strings and it is more than evident that the public is hungry for some real push back against the power of the corporate oligarchy (he even used the word oligarchy) that runs Washington.

I left wondering how many people noticed that he never once mentioned military and foreign policy?  It's rather hard to imagine making a speech to 9,000 people and asking them to vote for you to be president but avoiding the elephant in the middle of the room.  The Pentagon now rakes in 55% of every discretionary tax dollar so you'd think that would be on the table as a campaign issue.  But it is not which makes me more than alarmed.

My bullshit meter went off the charts last night. I've seen this song and dance before.  But it doesn't really matter what I think because those 9,000 mostly liberal democrats left the Civic Center last night thinking they have found another shining knight on a white horse to lead them to victory.  But victory won't be within their grasp unless we can talk about the US imperial war project that is draining our nation, killing people all over the world, and helping to increase climate change as the Pentagon has the largest carbon bootprint on the planet.  Sure taxes on Wall Street speculation will help some but until we get our hands on the Pentagon's pot of gold nothing really changes around here.....just saying.

Defending Sacred Hawai`i

Filmed on Mauna Kea June 24, 2015. Mahalo nui loa to everyone who shared their manaʻo.

The people are protesting construction of a Thirty Meter Telescope which would be one of the world's largest telescopes.

The billion-dollar project has drawn intense opposition from Native Hawaiians who say the 18-story observatory on the Big Island's Mauna Kea would desecrate land they consider sacred.

Mauna Kea is one of the tallest and most sacred mountains on Earth.  At 13,796 ft above sea level, it is the highest point in the Pacific Ocean.  Measured from its base at the bottom of the sea, it is the tallest mountain on Planet Earth.

Mauna Kea is the home of many gods and goddesses, and the site of many burials and shrines.

Mauna Kea holds a special place on Earth, as it stands as a place of peace and Aloha, not just for Hawai`i but for the world. Many sacred places of the world hold ancient wisdom bound in ritual and ceremony for this time in our history, to help us all heal ourselves and the world. Mauna Kea is one of those places. It is because Mauna Kea resides in Wao Akua--the realms of the Akua (God and Gods); and that it specifically does not reside in the realms of Na Kanaka (Man) that its sanctity is governed by the laws of the Heavens and not by the laws of Man. For it is only on Mauna Kea that one’s breath can be seized in a moment never to be returned.

Rally Against U.S. X-Band Radar in Kyoto

Report from Kyoto:

On July 4 the Kyoto Coalition against the US X-band Radar Base held a rally in central Kyoto, Japan.

The rally got larger participants than before. In fact, recent crackdown against the coalition expanded people’s concerns on the US base in Ukawa, Kyotango-city, where is located on northern part of Kyoto Prefecture.

People shared the latest situation there through the presentation from local activist in Ukawa, and then marched on central Kyoto.

The base is one of important parts of the global US Missile Defense (MD) network. On coming July 30 – August 1, the annual assembly of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space will be held in Kyoto. Many foreign peace activists will come to Kyoto to share the situation.

No to US base in Ukawa, Henoko and elsewhere!
