On the frontlines in Yorkshire

A short film about the role of 'RAF' Fylingdales in the US Missile Defence System and how it's contributing to a renewed nuclear arms race.

Made for KEEP SPACE FOR PEACE WEEK 5th-12th October 2019

'RAF' Fylingdales is US Department of Defense installation on Snod Hill in the North York Moors, England. The base forms part of the US Ballistic Missile Defense Systems aimed at shielding the US mainland from ballistic missile attack. In this role it is one of the 5 high powered of radars that cover the entire coastline of the continental United States to detect and warn of a missile attack. As part of a global system of US bases that are linked and coordinated to give warning, tracking and targeting capability for US battle management and warfare around the globe. These include Western Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, North America, Northern South America and areas of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans for ballistic missile launches.

The U.S. is hired help in Saudi Arabia

Ex-CIA analyst John Kiriakou talking about U.S. relations with the head-chopping monarchy in Saudi Arabia.

I've really grown to respect John as Karl Grossman and I have been on his weekly radio show Loud & Clear on Sputnik each week for the last several months.

John was a real whistle blower who spent almost two years in federal prison for exposing George W. Bush's torture program that violated international law.

Talk about heroes - John is a real hero to me.

The pressure continues on Ireland to release two U.S. veterans

Love this - supporters and family of U.S. veterans Tarak Kauff and Kenneth Mayers are taking it right to the Irish President Michael D. Higgins while he was in New York City.

Let them come home!  Give them back their passports - taken after a peaceful protest at Shannon Airport.

Stop supporting the U.S. war machine by allowing Pentagon war planes to land and refuel in Ireland at Shannon Airport.

Respect Irish neutrality and sovereignty!

Ecology: The paths of Europe & Ukraine diverge

By Borotba (the Struggle), Kharkov, Ukraine

Many people associate the period of Ukraine's independence with the rampant corruption, lawlessness and endless power struggle.  Political elites regularly replacing each other, realizing that their stay in power is short-lived, seek to provide themselves with a comfortable life for the future, as well as to create the appearance of active work and keeping of promises taken before the population.

The rush toward momentary benefits leads to disregard of domestic and international legislation, inflation of a 'soap bubble' of achieved results, which inevitably bursts after the coming of another political team to power.

This problem also affected the spheres of ecology and international trade of Ukraine.  Under-funding of regulatory authorities, rise in corruption level, attempts of the country's leadership to quickly get out of the lingering crisis by saving on the careful attitude to nature led to disastrous results, the consequences of which have already affected the European Union (EU).

In particular, a contemptuous disregard of the environment has led to contamination of crops grown in Ukraine, exported to Europe.

We can take the situation in the Kharkov Oblast [province] of Ukraine as an example.  In Novovodolazhsky district of this region, local authorities issued a permit for utilization of industrial waste of the 'Shebelinkagazdobycha' company (a member of the 'Ukrgazdobycha' corporation, engaged in shale gas production) at a household waste dump.

This dump occupies an area of five hectares and is located on the outskirts of the Nova Vodolaha village (about 50 km from the city of Kharkov.)

According to the environmental organization 'Kharkov environmental monitor', the waste of the 'Shebelinkagazdobycha' company utilized at this dump has an increased radioactive background.

The dump is also not specially equipped to store industrial waste, including oil refinery waste.  There is not a damp-proof course, dirt collectors and other necessary engineering constructions. Besides, the dump is located on the edge of the ravine, so that garbage and hazardous waste spread beyond it and this is technically impossible to prevent.  There are several perennial streams from the dump to the ravine, which flow through it to the tributary of the Olkhovatka River, then to the Mzha River and the Seversky Donets River.

All this led to the leakage of liquid waste into the soil and, as a consequence, to groundwater contamination.

In the immediate vicinity of the dump, there are fields of the major farms, the products of which are exported to the EU through agency firms [such as] Agrokom Novaya Vodolaga LLC.  The company is engaged in grain cultivation and storage, oil and animal fat production. Its capacity is 500 tons of products per day.  Vodolazhskoe LLC produces cereals, barley, buckwheat, corn, oats, rye, wheat and sunflower seeds.

Today, the export share to the EU only from the Kharkov Oblast of Ukraine is $300 million USD.  At the same time, 25% of the total export volume is food products and raw materials for their production (wheat, oils, fats, etc).  A significant part (75%) of products of this category are exported to Germany, Poland, and the Baltic countries.

Certainly, infected grain from Nova Vodolaha, in preparation for export, is cut [mixed] with cleaner grain from other regions of Ukraine.  But where is the guarantee that raw materials from Kharkov Oblast weren't used in production of a loaf of bread, which you bought somewhere in Hamburg?  There is no such guarantee.

So, the only adequate decision of the EU and Western European countries may be to tighten sanitary and environmental control of food products imported from Ukraine.  This proposal is made by a number of independent Ukrainian and European public organizations.  In our opinion, this step will not cause significant harm to the EU economy, but will preserve the health of EU citizens and will induce Ukrainian authorities to take environmental safety and international trade standards more seriously.

~  For long time we have some underground team of journalists there in that city, Kharkov, that is under iron fist of political repression by central Kiev government. So, our people sit quiet. Those people belong to radical socialist group Borotba (the Struggle). You can use the name of the group and in particular, their local coordinator, Pavel Zotov. He is now safe and he is out of Ukraine. (Sent by another Ukrainian political refugee now living in Russia.)

[When you note the location of the possible shale extraction zones (fracked gas) in this region of eastern Ukraine one can further see another reason the US-NATO have installed a puppet government in Kiev that is waging a war since 2014 against those who live so close to the Russian border.  The recent controversy surrounding Joe Biden's son, Hunter who was appointed to the board of a Ukrainian fossil fuel extraction corporation, is a key part of this story as well.   Bruce]

Baseball over for the O's

My favorite baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles, saw their season end yesterday by losing to the Boston Red Sox in a wild game.  The catch in the video above came in the 8th inning with the score tied.  Right-fielder Stevie Wilkerson saved them in that moment but the next inning the Red Sox won the game.

The Orioles had the 2nd worst record in all of major league baseball this year.  Last year they were the worst team.  But this year's team had many new young players who actually made it an interesting season for me.  Wilkerson was one of those.

On Saturday Mary Beth and I went to watch the Red Sox and Orioles game at historic Fenway Park in Boston thanks to her lifelong friend Marian.  We had a great time and the O's actually won that game by a score of 9-4.  I had on my O's hat and was surrounded by the faithful 'Red Sox nation' as they call themselves.

I don't like the corporate domination of sports but love baseball.  It is one of my few diversions from the constant madness of my country and much of the world.

So as they say in baseball - "Just wait til next year!"

'Let us in America reject enemy making'

Citizen diplomats, traveling with The Center for Citizen Initiatives to Russia in September, 2019, discovered that Russia is not our enemy.

Their experiences are documented in several videos which can be found on CCI's Youtube channel.

Decent story by ABC news on Biden controversy

More than once, after Joe Biden engaged in diplomacy on behalf of the United States, his son, Hunter Biden, conducted business in the same country (Ukraine & China).

This story just might indicate that the corporate oligarchs have decided to set Biden adrift.....after all the mainstream media don't usually do stories like this unless they have been told to do so by the 'owners'.

Will be interesting to watch what comes next.

We know that Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) met with Hillary Clinton recently.  One can speculate on that meeting.

Sunday song

Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375)
The Fates of Illustrious Men

Nature has hidden gold in the most secret depths of the earth, as it is dangerous to the human species. But Avarice, the prospector, searches voraciously and brings it to light. Avarice taught us to dig out the mountains, tunnel the bowels of the earth, and even to invade the depths of the sea with fish hooks. First, Avarice leveled the height of the mountains and cut down the woods to make roads. Then he showed us how to occupy foreign shores, to sign false contracts, to deceive wild beasts, to put serpents to sleep, to spread discord, to lie. He armed mankind in violence, invented poisons and treacheries. By all these methods and others as well, he gathered this glittering peril for some men in vast quantities.
