LOOKING FOR TROUBLE

The US airborne division, which is to take part in NATO exercise 'Spring Storm' in May arrived in Estonia. Around 150 personnel arrived in the military transport aircraft to the Amari airbase, according to the country's defense ministry.

Estonia is on Russia's border.

FAST LANE - SLOW LANE ON INTERNET

Digital rights groups are mobilizing over rumors the Federal Communications Commission may be about to abandon the principle of net neutrality. Organizations are concerned the agency may release new rules allowing companies to pay internet service providers to deliver their content faster than the content of competitors. The agency attempted to implement regulations ensuring net neutrality in the past, but a federal court struck down the move. Executive vice president of the National Hispanic Media Coalition Jessica Gonzalez speaks with RT's Ameera David to break down net neutrality and what it means for the public.

HEDGES ON THE MEDIA WAR

The crisis in Ukraine and the steadily dropping temperature in relations between Moscow and Washington made many talk about a new Cold War; and many others are worried it may turn 'hot'. But there's another war going on right now: the information war.

US Secretary of State Kerry has already attacked RT, calling it "Putin's propaganda machine." But Washington itself uses dubious evidence and fake facts. What is the information war? What methods is America using?

REMEMBERING THE TRUTH ABOUT THE VIETNAM WAR

I returned home to Maine this morning on the train from New York City.  Fellow Maine Veterans for Peace (VFP) member Doug Rawlings and I were up early at our respective home stays to get to Penn Station for the 7:00 am train to Boston.  We had loads of time on the four-hour ride back to Boston and then another two-hour bus ride to Portland to review the remarkable trip.

We got to the Judson Memorial Church yesterday at 1:00 pm to help set things up for the national VFP event called Full Disclosure: An Honest Commemoration of the American War in Vietnam that would run from 5:00-9:00 pm and drew over 200 people.  We helped hang banners in the huge church hall, put chairs out, and set up literature and food tables.  National VFP board member Tarak Kauff and his partner Ellen Davidson were the lead organizers and it was a pleasure to support their good work.

The photo above (taken by Ellen Davidson) is of a New York City artist who did a remarkable art performance piece for three full hours during the program.  Just as the event was to begin he slowly walked down the center isle toward the stage where something was hanging from a microphone stand and covered in a black shroud.  Dressed in a baggy uniform, and wearing oversized black boots, he carried a wooden military style rifle with a bayonet attached to the end.  Slowly he climbed the stage and dropped his rifle onto the floor and then removed the bayonet.  He carefully pulled the shroud away and a dummy was revealed that had a big red target on its chest.

One thought that maybe he would stick his knife into the dummy's chest but instead he carefully took the knife and cut the target away from the dummy.  Then he removed the rope that was looped around the dummy's neck and gently lowered the dummy into his lap as he sat down on the edge of the stage.  Then the soldier reached over and opened a Red Cross marked first-aid kit and took out a large sewing needle and string.  He very carefully threaded the needle and began to sew the dummy up where it had been previously cut open.

By now the speakers on the program had begun to address the assembled but the soldier continued to apply medical attention to the dummy.  He rested the dummy's head on a pillow made from a military blanket and applied white medical tape over the areas he had stitched up.

I was deeply moved by this performance art and found myself moving from the rear of the hall to near the front so that I could better see the 'operation' that was underway.  Most other people had similar responses and it was just beyond imagination to see how the artist/soldier kept this whole process going for the next three hours.  For a long time he just held and caressed the dummy in a most loving way.  It was all so real.

Around 8:00 pm the Vietnamese ambassador to the UN spoke and thanked VFP for its long and dedicated efforts to bring peace and healing to their war ravaged nation.  The ambassador warned us to remain vigilant as 'some countries' were still pushing wars in order to control other nations (and their resources) under the guise of 'responsibility to protect'.  At the end of the ambassador's presentation the artist/soldier left the stage with him.

I later learned that the artist had turned down an honorarium for his remarkable presentation, only asking for $10 to reimburse him for taxi fare.  I was told that his father was a war veteran who had taken his own life some time in the past.

Obama has announced a plan, starting in 2012, for a 13-year commemoration of the Vietnam War costing more than $65 million. Rather than conducting an honest national discussion to learn from the U.S. intervention in Vietnam, the Pentagon is promoting a whitewashing of the war without acknowledging the terrible damage done to the Vietnamese people and land. Neither will the military propaganda campaign confront the lasting impact of this conflict on US soldiers and their families—from loss of life and physical disabilities and illnesses to the transmission of birth defects to their children caused by exposure to Agent Orange. The government will not mention the millions of Vietnamese, including women and children, who were captured, tortured, displaced, and killed.

Nor will there be any representation of the heroic U.S. soldiers who resisted the war, or any real acknowledgment of massive domestic protest. And the Pentagon project will not pay tribute to the voices and postwar reconciliation activities of many antiwar veterans.

VFP is undertaking a national counter-effort to the Pentagon's attempt to rewrite the history of the Vietnam War.  The government intends to make the war appear to have been a noble struggle in order to more effectively sell future wars to unsuspecting citizens.  A people without a true understanding of their own history are blind and easily manipulated.

It was an honor to be at this first event by VFP to fully disclose the truth about the Vietnam War to the public.  It was an even greater honor to witness the heart stirring performance piece done by the artist who clearly understands the tragedy of war.

NYC SAYS NO TO 'PIVOT'

As President Obama tours Asia Pacific to strengthen military alliances and promote the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), Asians in New York City came together to say "No to the U.S. pivot to Asia," "US troops out of Asia," and "No to the TPPA."

SECRETARY OF BLOVIATION

John Kerry and the "last resort" rule as a cause for optimism

From:  The Vineyard of the Saker

Listening to Kerry today I went through a series of rather contradictory emotions.  First, I felt disgusted, then my disgust turned to anger, then to outright amazement and, by the end, I actually felt rather happy.  Let me explain why.

First, of course, my stomach turns every time I hear this prototypical representative of the 1%er plutocracy speaking to the world as if he was some kind of Emperor-schoolteacher scolding a class of rather dumb and unruly kids for their bad behavior and promising them a spanking.  We all know that folks like Obama or Baby Bush are just puppets, a mostly empty shell shown to the zombified public as "The President and Commander in Chief" while in reality these guys are basically spokesmen.  Not so Kerry.  He is in the Dick Cheney or James Baker class, not quite at the top of the power pyramid, but much higher up.  These are the folks who step in when the mindless puppet makes a mess and some brains are needed on the frontlines.  I find these people profoundly repulsive (though I could not help admiring James Baker's fantastic diplomatic skills).

My initial disgust turned into rage when I heard Kerry speak such lies that out to make even a politician feel ashamed of himself.   Most of what Kerry said could quite literally be turned around by 180 degrees and become true.  Even though I am now 50 years old and I have seen all sorts of lies, deceptions, betrayals and falsehoods over the years, I still have a naive voice in me screaming "how can he say that?", "does he not feel horribly ashamed?", "how can he live with himself?".  I know.  I am naive and idealistic.  I just cannot get used to it.  Even after 50 years.

Eventually, my rage turned into outright amazement.  At this point, I was beyond good and evil, I was marveling at the nerve it takes to go on world-wide TV and basically state that he earth is not round, but triangular, that 2+2=317 and that black is pink with green dots.  He even added that it was impossible to turn black into grey, that black was just that, black.  At this point I was awed.

And then, suddenly, it hit me.  Kerry and the interests he represents are really terrified and frustrated.  His statement is a desperate attempt to do what the lawyers call the "last resort rule".  It goes like this: “If you have the law, hammer the law. If you have the facts, hammer the facts. If you have neither the law nor the facts, hammer the table”.  Kerry was hammering the table really very, very strongly and that, I realized, was an implicit admission that neither the (international) law nor the facts were on his side.  Had the facts or the law been on his side, there would have been no need for table hammering, of course.

His panic and frustration also showed in his rather clumsy attack on the Russia Today TV channelHere is what he said:

In fact, the propaganda bullhorn that is the state-sponsored Russia Today program, has been deployed to promote – actually, Russia Today network – has deployed to promote President Putin’s fantasy about what is playing out on the ground. They almost spend full time devoted to this effort to propagandize and to distort what is happening or not happening in Ukraine. Instead, in plain sight, Russia continues to fund, coordinate, and fuel a heavily armed separatist movement in Donetsk.
But think about it:  Russia Today does not broadcast in Ukrainian or Russian.  It broadcasts in English, Spanish and Arabic.  The only thing RT does broadcast in Russian are its documentaries on its dedicated website: http://doc.rt.com/on-air/.  This is a tiny fraction of what the channel really does and its audience in Russia or the Ukraine is minute compared to the one of the big Russian TV channels.  So why did Kerry single our Russia Today?  The answer is obvious, of course, it is because Russia Today is a very popular TV channel outside Russia or the Ukraine.  According to Wikipedia,
The network's signal is carried by 22 satellites and over 230 operators, which allows some 644 million people to watch the channel in more than 100 countries. RT America is available to 85 million people in the United States.  In 2011 it was the second most-watched foreign news channel in the U.S. after BBC World News, and the number one foreign station in five major U.S. urban areas in 2012. It is also very popular among younger American people, U.S. college students, and in U.S. inner city neighborhoods. In 2013 RT has become the first TV news channel in history to reach 1 billion views on YouTube. According to the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board between 2.2–2.3 million Britons tuned their televisions to RT during the second half of 2012, making it the fourth-most watched rolling news channel in Britain, behind BBC News, Sky News and Al Jazeera English.
Remember the candid admission of Walter Isaacson, chairman of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, who openly declared that,
“We can't allow ourselves to be out-communicated by our enemies, you've got Russia Today, Iran's Press TV, Venezuela's TeleSUR, and of course, China is launching an international broadcasting 24-hour news channel with correspondents around the world [and has] reportedly set aside $6 -10 billion dollars – we have to go to Capitol Hill with that number – to expand their overseas media operations.”
So there you have it.  The problem is not that Russia Today is stirring up the people of eastern Ukraine, the problem is that thanks to Russia Today the people in the West are beginning to see through the official propaganda!  That is the real reason for Kerry frustrated outburst.

So, to sum things up:

1) The law is not on Kerry's side.
2) The facts are not on Kerry's side.
3) The people in the West are beginning to see through the lies of the propaganda machine.
4) There is nothing the Empire can do about any of that.

If any confirmation of that was needed, it came today with the amazing performance of Mark Levine on today's CrossTalk show.  It's not on YouTube yet, but you can watch it here: http://rt.com/shows/crosstalk/154788-ukraine-info-war-russia/.  Levine turned CrossTalk into CrossShout, another clear case of "table hammering".  Why - for the same reasons as Kerry.  Nothing else works for him anymore.

Ever since Putin came back to power, Russia is not playing by the same set of rules as the ones drafted by the Empire.  Both in Syria and the Ukraine, Russia has been very carefully but steadily pushing back the international AngloZionist plutocracy and loosening its grip on the planet and this is directly reflected in the impotent rage of Kerry and his fellow 1%ers.

This, I think, is very good news indeed.

Cheers,

The Saker

DUELING TV NEWS PROGRAMS

The top US diplomat John Kerry has accused Moscow of using RT International as a tool to distort reality. Pepe Escobar, a foreign affairs journalist, joins RT to talk more about Washington's attack.

FROM THE WINDOW ALL IS CLEAR

On the train today from Maine to New York with fellow Veterans for Peace member Doug Rawlings.  We were heading to N.Y. for the April 26 Full Disclosure: An Honest Commemoration of the American War in Vietnam event planned in New York City at the Judson Memorial Church.  The event is being sponsored by Veterans for Peace and Iraq Veterans Against the War.

While on the train we agreed to each write a poem and this is mine.

From the Window All Is Clear

Two old poets on a train
sparks fly as they
share their words
both understanding
the rage and severe
disappointment,
depression
that veterans
rightly feel

Betrayed
by the flag
and the great white fathers
who sit inside the company house
fabricating stories
to sell war

From the rail car window
the signs of decay
are everywhere
crumbling
boarded-up factories
in Worcester
homeless lined up
waiting for a meal
but nothing is free anymore
there is always a price to pay

Das Kapital sailed
to distant shores
where the poor
are even poorer
and work for next to nothing

Those at the top

always casting about
for new ways

ON THE FLY

I bought a used scooter last summer so I can more easily get to Brunswick which is about 10 miles from Bath.  It's been sitting in the shed for the last five months but now that winter is mostly over I can get back on it.

I took it to the shop to get serviced early in the week and picked it up today.  It's a Piaggio Fly and has a maximum speed of 50 mph if I am going downhill with the wind at my back.  It does about 30 mph going up hill and there are alot of hills around here.  The scooter gets an average gas mileage of 117 Mpg.

Today the wind was really howling.  I was flying all over the road coming home.  Thought I might end up in Kansas with the dog Toto from the Wizard of Oz.

Last fall while sitting in the driveway the wind was blowing so hard it took the windshield right off the scooter.  Cost me $35 to have it reinstalled.

I have a "No Drones" sticker on the back of the box that is attached to the scooter.  The repairman at the shop asked me what it meant.  I told him how the US has used drones to kill many innocent people in Pakistan and Yemen.  I described to him how people have been killed at weddings, funerals and outdoor political meetings.  I said I believe the US kills innocent people intentionally because it creates more enemies within the grieving families and gives the Pentagon justification for maintaining permanent bases in Central Asia and now on the African continent.  I asked him if he'd become an enemy if his family had been killed by drones.  His reply was yes.

UNREST SPREADS IN EASTERN UKRAINE

In the eastern Ukraine, which is an industrial hub and key sector of the country's economy, people are on edge, staging rallies and going on strikes. The Donetsk and Lugansk regions are also currently hotspots for anti-Kiev unrest. RT's Paula Slier went there to find out what's driving people to the edge.

PROTEST AT VANDENBERG

Vandenberg from Regis Tremblay on Vimeo.

This just in from Regis Tremblay.....a short video from the Global Network protest at Vandenberg AFB, California on the first day of our 22nd annual meeting.

During the video Global Network board member Dennis Apel is arrested.  Apel, a Catholic Worker activist, lives near the base and has been banned from the location because of many arrests there for non-violent civil disobedience.  Not pictured was the arrest of MacGregor Eddy (WILPF) who has also been banned from the base.

Apel took the base ban case to the US Supreme Court which voted 9-0 saying that the base has the right to decide their boundaries.  The other part of the case, the right of people to repeatedly protest at the base, was sent back to Federal District Court for further review.

Vandenberg AFB plays a key role in Pentagon military satellite launching, testing nuclear missiles, and most recently as a deployment site for so-called “missile defense” interceptors.

Each year the Global Network holds its space organizing conference in a different part of the world.  Last year the group met in the ‘high north’ of Sweden, where the US and NATO are creating a space surveillance and drone testing center.

OBAMA TRIPPING IN ASIA

Obama just had sushi in Japan and is rounding up the allies to get them to fork over some more money to help pay for the surrounding of China.  The reward for Asia-Pacific countries that participate in such an expensive and dangerous endeavor?  A piece of the action for the top 1% if they go along with corporate military, banking and austerity agendas.  In a way Obama is like a priest offering 'faith' for a price as the collection plate is passed among the assembled.

Prof. Jose Maria Sison, Chairperson, International League of Peoples' Struggle writes:
The US “pivot to Asia” is a multi-pronged offensive that includes the further deployment or “rebalancing” of US military forces and military bases into the region, the drive to forge a long-sought Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), and the consolidation and expansion of its strategic alliances with selected countries in the region. These objectives are part of the long-term efforts of US imperialism to advance its economic, political and military interests and reassert its preeminent power in the region.

The renewed US focus on Asia, highlighted since late 2011 by a series of policy statements and positions in various summits and country visits by top US officials and considered a cornerstone of current US foreign policy, will be further pushed by Obama in his upcoming four-country visit. He is expected to advance or finalize a number of multilateral agreements when he visits Japan from April 23 to 24, South Korea from Apr 25 to 26, Malaysia from April 26 to 28, and the Philippines from April 28 to 29.

Secretary of Mis-State John Kerry recently had some telling comments about the ability of the US to control Russia and China.  He spoke longingly for a return to the Cold War days:

“It may not have seemed so at the time, obviously, to great leaders, but it was easier than it is today – simpler is maybe a way to put it,” Mr Kerry said of the Cold War era. “The choices were less varied, less complicated, more stark, more clear: Communism, democracy; West, East; the Iron Curtain, the great line of divide.”

I have one particularly personal Kerry experience.  As Bush II was preparing to attack Iraq with 'shock and awe' in 2003 I was on a speaking tour of western Massachusetts.  In the office of the American Friends Service Committee I noticed a huge stack of letters they were faxing to their then Sen. John Kerry.  I was told that Kerry had declined to meet with representatives of the peace movement who were making themselves publicly known in huge numbers.  Kerry supported going to war and did not have the courage to face his constituents.

I also once heard George W. Bush say, when he was running against Kerry for reelection in 2004, that he'd never met his fellow Skull & Bonesmen before in person.  I had a real hard time swallowing that tale.  During their presidential debates Kerry strongly stated that he'd spend $100 billion more on the military than Bush would.  Kerry graciously took the fall as Bush had to steal the election that was more like professional wresting than real democracy.  All show and pretense.

Obama and Kerry are quite a team.  Both weak-willed, ambitious, no core values, and willing to sell their souls for power.  One black, one white.  One from the upper class, the other from the middle class.  The Mod Squad if you will.

Their job now is to show the nation that the Democratic Party is fully in the bag of corporate capitalism.  Those well-intentioned liberals who still defend their party policies of imperial militarism and domestic austerity are dreaming their life away.

This current Asia-Pacific tour is the head-tripping of a collapsing yet still dangerous empire.

HOW DRONES USE SATELLITES

Distributed Ground Control System feed map for drone warfare all linked together with very expensive military satellites.

Might have to watch it a couple times, it's very short but full of information.

Chris Cole (UK Drone Campaign Network) reports:

The Distributed Common Ground System is the US military’s key tool for collecting, analysing and distributing information and intelligence collected from U-2, Global Hawk, Predator, Reaper, MC-12 and what the USAF discreetly calls “other ISR platforms” (i.e. the Sentinel).   Other, more traditional manned aircraft also feed intelligence from various electronic sensors into the DCGS.

There are five military DCGS core sites which receive, analyze and disseminate information from “multiple ISR platforms in multiple theaters of operation simultaneously.”   The core sites, which are in turn networked with more than 20 other specialist information processing sites, are located at Langley Air Force base in Virginia, Beale Air Force base in California, Hickam Air Force base in Hawaii; Ramstein Air Base in Germany and Osan Air Force Base in South Korea.

A sixth DCGS, developed and operated by the US ‘intelligence community’ is not marked on the map no doubt for national security reasons.

National Campaign Launched to Clean Up ‘America’s Secret Fukushima’
Earth Day Actions at Mt. Rushmore & Cheyenne River Expose Toxic Threats

Red Shirt Village, Oglala Lakota Nation (SOUTH DAKOTA) –

Organizations from throughout the United States held an Earth Day ceremony to launch a nation-wide campaign to clean up hazardous abandoned uranium mines (AUMs). Clean Up The Mines! calls for effective and complete eradication of the contamination caused by the estimated 10,000 abandoned uranium mines that are silently poisoning extensive areas of the U.S.

Clean Up The Mines! volunteers from across the country toured abandoned mines this week. They donned hazardous materials suits at Mount Rushmore and carried a large banner to raise awareness of the 169 AUMs in the Southwestern Black Hills near Edgemont. There are another 103 AUMS in the Northwest corner near Buffalo. The Northern Great Plains Region of Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, North and South Dakota contains more than 3,000 AUMs.

In Riley Pass, one of the largest AUMs in South Dakota, the deadly effect of the mine was apparent. As the group approached the bluff, the tree line ended abruptly at the edge of the mine. At Ludlow, the group measured radioactivity with a Geiger counter at an elementary school playground that was 44 microrems/hour. This is the equivalent of more than 150 Counts Per Minute (CPM), over the 100 CPM threshold, which means it cannot be attributed to background radiation. During the tour, people from every community spoke of health problems related to uranium exposure and their high level of concern over the lack of information about the AUMs and action to remediate them.

Today, dozens from the community joined with members of organizations including Defenders of Black Hills, Clean Water Alliance, Dakota Rural Action, Peace Pagoda, Veterans for Peace, and Popular Resistance at the Cheyenne River Bridge. They posted signs stating “Warning, Radioactive River” to raise awareness of the radioactive contamination of the Cheyenne River caused by AUMs.
Afterwards, a rally was held in the nearby community of Red Shirt Village where residents cannot drink local water due to uranium and arsenic contamination. Robert Two Bulls, a local spiritual leader, initiated the campaign launch in prayer.

Charmaine White Face, a scientist and coordinator of Defenders of the Black Hills, facilitated the event. “For the American public to be exposed to radioactive pollution and not be warned by federal and state governments is unconscionable,” stated White Face. “Shame on the American federal and state governments for allowing their citizens to be placed in such danger for more than 50 years and not stopping the source of the danger. It is a national travesty.” She noted that thyroid cancer rates are ten times higher than the national average in Western South Dakota. Uranium exposure also causes birth defects, kidney disease and numerous other serious health conditions.

“The mines are a silent health threat. Millions of people are at risk of breathing or ingesting radioactive particles that travel through the air and water and settle in soil where they enter our food system.” Margaret Flowers M.D., an organizer with Popular Resistance. “From speaking to community members and taking our own measurements, we find enough evidence to say there should be more investigation and serious efforts to protect the people. That’s why this campaign to clean up the mines is so important.”

Sandra Cuny Buffington, from the Red Shirt community, a rancher with cattle in the Bad Lands, lived at the river until it wasn’t possible anymore because of contamination. She spoke of high rates of cancer in the area. “We know we are contaminated but where are we going to go? I don’t know of any other life than the one that I have lived. As crazy as it sounds, you learn how to live with it.”

“Abandoned uranium mines are devastating to the health of local populations,” explained Dr.  Jill Stein, former Green Party presidential candidate, “The mines threaten not only our health but our economies and ecosystems as well. We’re here to insist on cleaning up the mines and transitioning to a clean renewable energy system. This transition can put American back to work while vastly improving our health. The health savings alone will pay for the costs of this transition.”

“Desecration of the land, the water, the very air we breathe. We see lack of concern for living beings, placing profit before people, before the living earth,” said Tarak Kauff, Board of Directors, Veterans for Peace. “The radiation affects more than just the first nation people living in close proximity. The wind and water carry cancer-causing substances much further. It up to us, an awakened public, ordinary black, brown, white and red people working together to demand, to insure that these toxic highly radioactive abandoned mines be cleaned up – for us and for future generations.”

“From mining, in-situ leaching (similar to fracking), milling, processing, nuclear bomb and energy, depleted uranium weapons to the waste products that have no grave, the only safe place for uranium is in the ground. Uranium and other radioactive materials have been poisoning our environment in increasing amounts since the 1940s,” said Helen Jaccard, volunteer with Clean Up The Mines. “Exploitative corporations and negligent government agencies walked away from their responsibilities.”

“If we don’t defend our sacred water it will be the end of us all,” added Dennis Yellow Thunder, Natural Resources Technician for the Oglala Sioux Tribe Natural Resources Regulatory Resources Agency. “We must support this campaign to clean up the mines. We need to protect this land, our water and the sacred Black Hills. We need to do it from our heart.”

White Face concluded, “Currently no laws require clean up of these dangerous abandoned Uranium mines. We are letting Congress know: It is time to clean up the mines! We value persistence. We will employ a variety of tactics including legislative and judicial avenues to hold the government and corporations accountable for their negligence and community-based actions to raise awareness and clean up the mines.”

MILITARIZING CANADA

THE SMOKING POP-GUN

UKRAINE: "Obama Endorses a Forgery"

By Diana Johnstone, 20 April 2014

On Friday, April 18, President Obama voiced his righteous indignation over anti-Semitic fliers pasted on synagogue walls in the pro-Russian eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk.  The fliers, calling on all Jews to register or face expulsion, had appeared the day before and were instantly denounced by Donetsk leaders as a gross provocation and a forgery.

The next day, however, Obama “expressed his disgust quite bluntly”.  At least, that is what his hawkish national security advisor, Susan Rice, told the public. “I think we all found word of those pamphlets to be utterly sickening, and they have no place in the 21st century,” she declared. This presidential reaction occurred 24 hours after the pamphlet in question had been thoroughly denounced as a fake, not only by the Donetsk leader, Denis Pushilin, who said his signature on the document had been forged, but by local Jewish community leaders and even by The New Republic, which cannot be accused of indifference to anti-Semitism.

Scarcely had the fake document been glued to a wall than Secretary of State John Kerry mounted his habitual high horse to declare resoundingly that: “In the year 2014, after all of the miles travelled and all of the journey of history, this is not just intolerable, it's grotesque. It is beyond unacceptable.” (It is an essential part of the Imperial rhetoric to assert on every such occasion what is or is not acceptable in “the second American century”.)

Now let’s be logical. When John Kerry denounces this document before the ink is dry, when President Obama and Susan Rice publicly endorse this forgery after it has been amply exposed in world media as disinformation, we must logically conclude that this propaganda morsel was a deliberate part of the US strategy to destabilize Ukraine by slandering pro-Russian anti-fascists as anti-Semitic. The purpose is clearly to drown out news of the pro-Nazi sympathies of the Svoboda party and the Right Sector that the US has chosen as anti-Russian allies. How can top US leaders be perfectly aware of what is written in Ukrainian on a piece of paper glued to a synagogue in Donetsk, and not know what was written in Haaretz and The New Republic?  These endorsements are strong evidence of complicity in the forgery, since it is not credible that Kerry, Rice and Obama were too innocent to suspect a forgery.

I call this the smoking pop-gun.

And meanwhile, while the US neocons try to smear the Eastern Ukrainian anti-fascists as anti-Semites, Benyamin Netanyahu is trying to cozy up to Putin.  The Israeli leader is clever enough to bow out of a losing game. All those US leaders who constantly pledge their allegiance to Israel are outraged at such disloyalty.

Never before have U.S. leaders been quite so reckless in asserting falsehoods as in this Ukrainian operation. They have a scenario and they are carrying it out, despite revelations that Victoria Nuland personally selected the new Ukrainian prime minister, Arseniy “Yats” Yatsenyuk, that the Kiev snipers who facilitated the putsch that put Yats in office were hired by the pro-Western rebels, that their “freedom fighters” this time are Hitler fans and that about half the population of Ukraine identifies with Russia.

Never mind, the show must go on.  They are counting on the vast, bottomless ignorance of the American masses concerning the rest of the world to allow them to get away with anything. The public doesn’t need to know anything about Ukraine, all they need is to be persuaded that it is Goldylocks being threatened by a big bad bear.

But the whole world is not that ignorant. Notably not the Germans.

All Is Not Quiet on the Eastern Front

German media, who, like other NATO satellites, have been largely following the anti-Putin Russophobe line laid down by Washington, are being besieged by complaints from readers and television spectators.  The German public seems to know where Ukraine is located and what is happening.

Just as John Kerry was reminding the world of US moral leadership in the 21st century, three hundred German intellectuals addressed a respectful and supportive letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Directly answering Putin’s request for understanding from the German people, the letter recalled that “the Soviet Union had made the decisive contribution to freeing Europe from National Socialism, at an incomparable loss of life,” and was ready in 1990 “to support German reunification, to dissolve the Warsaw Pact in 1991 and to accept united Germany’s membership in NATO”. But the West had failed to honor its agreement, and had rewarded Gorbachev’s generosity by aggressively expanding NATO right up to Russia’s doorstep.

It is fully documented, the letter notes, that “the United States has taken advantage of the justified protests of the Ukrainian population for its own aims”, along the model of other countries such as Serbia, Libya, etc.

Under these circumstances, with some thousand US military bases worldwide and US control of straits and the resulting danger to the Russian Black Sea fleet, the German signatories see the secession of Crimea as “a defensive measure with a clear message: up to here and no farther! The decisive difference with the declaration of independence of Kosovo is that for the latter the precondition was an illegal bombing campaign by NATO – unfortunately with German participation.”

            The U.S. Purpose

The German letter recalls that Putin has called for economic cooperation in a “Common European House” from Lisbon to Vladivostok, in which Ukraine could act as an “ideal bridge” for future cooperation between the European Union and a Eurasian Union.

“We are convinced that the purpose of the United States’ massive seizure of influence is to make this bridge function impossible.”

Observing that recent polls show that a majority of Germans understand the Russian reaction to Ukraine events and reject any confrontation with the Russian Federation, the signatories promise, despite the foreseeable difficulties, to do what they can to prevent the splitting of Europe.  They close with personal wishes to Putin for strength, perseverance, wisdom and good luck.

We are certainly not there yet, but it would be some sort of poetic justice if the final historic outcome of the land-grabbing caper by Victoria Nuland, John Kerry, Susan Rice and Samantha Power were to gain control of a divided, quarrelsome and bankrupt Ukraine… and lose control of Germany.

ALL THINGS MUST PASS

  • MB is off work today and I took the car to Brunswick to do some needed errands.  Along the way I listened to right-wing talk radio (there is no middle-of-the-road or left-wing talk radio here) and Glenn Beck was mocking Earth Day.  I felt sad that he is so disconnected from our spinning orb we call home.  Some get it and some don't..... how could it be?
  • While listening I heard a political radio advertisement speaking to women.  The ad was saying that raising the minimum wage in Maine would badly hurt women - thus avoid at all costs!  This ad was paid for by......

  • Glenn Beck was also interviewing a religious leader about how to successfully raise children.  The man was saying that we have to teach our kids to work (which I am not opposed to doing) and then went on to say that we have to teach them that with their money they are in fact "managing $$$ for the lord".... and what would the lord have us do with our money?  Buy guns and warships or feed the poor?
  • My horoscope today suggests that I not deal with money matters nor try to do anything that takes much thought.  Instead it suggests I should do something physical such as picking up fallen branches in the yard.  They make good kindling in the winter.

MOYERS ON OIL-I-GARCHY

The median pay for the top 100 highest-paid CEOs at America’s publicly traded companies was a handsome $13.9 million in 2013. That’s a 9 percent increase from the previous year, according to a new Equilar pay study for The New York Times.

These types of jumps in executive compensation may have more of an effect on our widening income inequality than previously thought. A new book that’s the talk of academia and the media, Capital in the Twenty-First Century by Thomas Piketty, a 42-year-old who teaches at the Paris School of Economics, shows that two-thirds of America’s increase in income inequality over the past four decades is the result of steep raises given to the country’s highest earners.

US-NATO PUSHING WAR WITH RUSSIA... AND SOME HISTORY

NATO Supreme Allied Commander Gen. Philip Breedlove continues to play up the idea of an imminent Russian invasion of eastern Europe, saying the alliance is preparing “countermoves” in the region that likely will include US ground troops along the Russian border.

Gen. Breedlove said the plan right now is for a buildup of land, air, and naval assets in the region to “build assurance for our easternmost allies."

It never fails to astound me how hypocritical these cats are - I remember every damn US military attack and occupation of a sovereign nation during my lifetime....makes my blood boil.

Why should I get upset?  It's just the way it has always been some say.  But I was a Young Republican Air Force GI, who bought the patriotic line.  Huge framed pictures of Air Force war planes on the flight line hung on my bedroom wall, along with my crucifix, most of my first 17 years.  I feel betrayed by the system and give thanks to the great spirit that I discovered Native American history and spirituality as a young boy to counterbalance my right-wing brainwashing.  I indeed did eventually see the light.

I have a special ear for the bullshit now.  I grew up around it and understand how the whole thing works.

Studies show that a high-level of the current US military officer corps are right-wing evangelical 'Christens' who are excitedly anticipating the 'coming rapture".  By forcing the confrontation with the 'bad bear' they will help bring on the second coming of Christ.  They are doing gods work.  They are the American version of the Taliban and they are out to bring the world to its knees.

Behind them are the power boys who really run the show.  They make the big money and control the land and resources around the world.  The corporate Mr. Big.  They use the American Taliban as their shock (and awe) troops. Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler was right when he called it a racket.  It's a corporate criminal syndicate.  I wish the cops would chase them down instead of spying on, infiltrating, and disrupting citizens movements back at home that are trying to deal with the problems and really help the people.

REPRESSIVE NEW WORLD

They try to sell all of this new surveillance technology as a way to make our lives more secure and easier.  But there can be little doubt that these technologies are all about tracking every move we make.

The next step will be getting rid of money and just having all your financial dealings computerized.  Then if you move into opposition against the corporate oil-i-garchy they could just have your computer file turned off and you would have no way to travel, buy food, or the like.

Think I am being paranoid? Think again.  We are being sold a pig in a poke here that will make it easier to control all of us.

Agree to a microchip implanted in my body?  Not while I am still living and breathing.

CAMBRIDGE CONFERENCE

I took the bus early this morning from Portland to Boston in order to get to the Asia-Pacific peace conference being held in Cambridge at the Friends Meeting House.  I will speak on a panel after lunch.

I got here about 30 minutes after the event began and caught the end of speech by Hideki Yoshikawa from Okinawa who was sharing stories about their struggle against expanding US military bases.  Other activists from Korea and China will also be talking.

Hyun Lee, the Korean activist from New York City, who came to Maine last week to our rally at Bath Iron Works is here.  She, along with Joseph Gerson from the AFSC who organized today's event, also spoke in Orono and Brunswick last week when they came to Maine.

These events in Maine and here are being held in response to the call by the National Working Group for Peace & Demilitarization in Asia and the Pacific for nationwide actions this spring to bring this important issue to the public's attention.

The Obama 'pivot' into the Asia-Pacific to encircle China will be an expensive and provocative undertaking.

I take the bus back to Portland tonight.

THE PIRATES ARE IN CONTROL

Everyone is talking about it
those running the show here
are heavily psychopathic
(Miriam Webster dictionary: "one who has not lost contact
with reality
but who engages in abnormally aggressive and seriously
irresponsible behavior
with little or no
feelings of guilt")

Sounds familiar
their bloodlines
like Forbes
ran drugs during
Opium Wars
pirates did slave trade
sold and still sell weapons
bought up our media
and government
they are MR. BIG

the pirates dug up
Geronimo's skull
grandpa-Bush did the deed
and now the Indian remains
inside the Tomb at Yale

The message from Skull & Bones
to the world is
"we always get you in
the end"
WE always win

Look at Haiti today
they dared long ago
to revolt against
the pirate class
Vietnam was nuked with
Agent Orange
Iraq with DU
the oceans with sonar
the whales cry to us
we turn away
we need the jobs
at the shipyard

the pirates love death
and worship it
they are the evil of
this world

We elect the pirates
and give them power
and glory
and hefty pensions
and 'get out of jail free' cards

They laugh at us
as we mimic their lives
the pirates hold hands
and toast with the sultans
to their ill-gotten
good fortune

But they fear us
they worry to death
that someday the people
will turn
on the
pirates.

PLANNING FOR WAR IN ASIA-PACIFIC

COLD WAR IS HERE

As negotiations over the crisis in Ukraine begin in Geneva, tension is rising in the Ukrainian east after security forces killed three pro-Russian protesters, wounded 13 and took 63 captive in the city of Mariupol.

Ukrainian officials said the pro-Russian separatists had attempted to storm a military base. The killings came just after the unraveling of a Ukrainian operation to retake government buildings from pro-Russian separatists. Earlier today, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the authorities in Kiev of plunging the country into an "abyss" and refused to rule out sending forces into Ukraine.

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has announced a series of steps to reinforce its presence in eastern Europe. "We will have more planes in the air, more ships on the water and more readiness on the land," Rasmussen said.

Democracy Now is joined by Stephen Cohen, professor emeritus of Russian studies and politics at New York University and Princeton University. "We are not at the beginning of a new Cold War, we are well into it," Cohen says, "which alerts us to the fact 'hot war' is imaginable now. It’s unlikely, but it’s conceivable — and if it’s conceivable, something has to be done about it."

HERE AND NOW

Gangjeong village on Jeju Island

The starkness of the times
causing even old warriors
to fall
the suffering can be a load
even on the strongest

For many moons our people
have struggled to survive
been through hell
and back
but we are here

Now

Many of us have fallen
victim to the hype, the pretense,
the flim-flam man,
and the desire to just
be one of the crowd

That's OK

It's just time to move on
to get serious about dealing
with our present
here and now

Feel the spiritual connection
to our relatives,
that is real,
the two-leggeds,
the four-leggeds, the things
that fly, the things that swim,
the water, the air, the earth

All our relatives

We must struggle,
crawl, dribble,
snort, swear, and swim
in order to protect
the future generations
who cry out to us
in our sleep.

Here we are now.....

SWITCHING SIDES

Kiev’s military faced off with protesters in east Ukraine on Wednesday to sort out their differences…and found none. Soldiers appeared reluctant to go into battle against anti-government activists.

When Ukrainian Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) entered downtown Kramatorsk as part of Kiev’s military operation against anti-government protesters in the east of the country, they were stopped in their tracks, surrounded by crowds of local residents.

One YouTube video of what happened next shows a woman coming to a soldier with the reproach: “You are the army, you must protect the people.

We are not going to shoot, we weren’t even going to,” is the soldier’s reply.

Similar conversations could be heard at each of several APCs which entered the city, with locals promising to defend their neighbors, in case the soldiers start a military operation.

Military vehicles parked in downtown Kramatorsk have turned into hotspots for political discussion, with people beside the vehicles trying to get their views through to people on top of the tanks.

Another video features the Kramatorsk crowds loudly chanting “Army with the people” and applauding the soldiers as they were leaving their APCs.

“Guys, we are with you! You are great!” women are heard yelling to the vacating soldiers.

Six Ukrainian military vehicles in Kramatorsk actually switched sides and began flying Russian flags on Wednesday.

Around 60 crew members of Ukrainian armored vehicles sent to Kramatorsk for carrying out the military operation against anti-government protesters, have switched sides and joined the local self-defense squads, according to RIA Novosti, citing the self-defense leadership.

We’ve seen here, that these are neither separatists nor terrorists, but ordinary local residents, with whom we are not going to go to battle,” one of the defected soldiers said.

All of the troops who decided to side with the self-defense come from the Dnepropetrovsk region, neighboring with the Donetsk one.

This YouTube video shows an encounter where some of the Ukrainian military vehicles raise Russian flags, while others raise the flags of the Donetsk People’s Republic that the supporters of federalization want to establish. The crowd reacted with loud cheers.

The soldiers and civilians started fraternizing very quickly and soon were joking about “coming for a visit without weapons next time.” Many of the soldiers put on St. George’s ribbons, the traditional Russian emblem used to commemorate the Soviet Union’s fight against Nazism in World War II.

Tuesday, when the military operation against anti-government protesters in the east was launched, was not as peaceful.

According to activists, four people were killed and two others injured when troops seized an airfield in Kramatorsk, which had earlier been controlled by protesters.

ODDS & ENDS

  • It took me 12 hours to get home yesterday from Toronto.  Time has new meaning as travel becomes even more problematic.... airline corporations are cutting corners and wild weather is disrupting schedules.

  • My hosts in Toronto were long-time activists Judy and Jim Deutsch.  Jim was a radical student at Columbia University during the 60's student occupation of the administration building.  He was there when Columbia Professor Seymour Melman (father of economic conversion) crawled through the window in an attempt to join with the students.  Apparently Melman’s self-intro was poorly received and some shouted him down.  Melman crawled back out the window. Judy is one of the leaders of Science for Peace at the University of Toronto where she teaches in addition to a full schedule of local organizing.  On Sunday night they organized a dinner party where about 15 people (including some students) sat around and talked about growing fascism and what we should do in response.  It was a stimulating discussion.  No easy answers were found... just recognition that we must do the hard work of local-regional-national-international grassroots organizing.  We all agreed that there is way too much solo-silo organizing - alot of this has to do with organizational egos, power, money, media contacts, etc.  Also was agreed that governments, political parties, and foundations fund some "progressive" groups to keep them toeing the line.  These kinds of things happen in Maine and across the nation.  In Canada some groups get government money and spout the party line on militarism.

  • People in Toronto are worried about the possible reelection of their crazy, spoiled Mayor Rob Ford. The crack smokin, arm swinging, bad mouth rich boy wears a Maple Leafs hockey jersey to keep the working class fans in check.  In the end Ford does the work of the oligarchy by introducing austerity and making the political scene toxic that discourages public participation.  It is the same story with our right wing gutter-mouth Gov. Paul LePage here in Maine.  He won in a three-way race with 38% of the vote but is up for reelection in November.  At this moment he is behind his Democrat challenger in the polls.
  • Getting into Canada was easy this time.  Sometimes I breeze through and other times I've been pulled aside to discuss my history of non-violent civil disobedience that is logged into the computer.  But interestingly the last three times I've come back from international trips I've been pulled into another room for questioning by the US Customs & Immigration.  Yesterday on my return there was a replay of this game.  I get quizzed particularly about my recent arrest at the Hancock Airfield in Syracuse, New York that has been turned into a drone base.  (I am still waiting for my trial date.) They also bring up my "Order of Protection" (sort of ban-and-bar letter from the base) except it also says that I must:
"Refrain from assault, stalking, harassment, aggravated harassment, menacing, reckless endangerment, strangulation, criminal obstruction of breathing or circulation, disorderly conduct, criminal mischief, sexual abuse, sexual misconduct, forcible touching, intimidation, threats or any criminal offense or interference with the victim.... members of family, household...”

  • Who is the order protecting?   Col. Greg A. Semmel, the commander of the base... so US Customs & Immigration asks me if I am traveling with Mr. Semmel?  I told them I'd not know the man if I stumbled into him.  I've come to the conclusion that the purpose of these little interrogations is just to remind me that MR. BIG knows who I am and has his electronic eye on me.

  • One older man in Toronto, a long-time activist that I've met in the past, told our Sunday night dinner party that he was depressed by the current state of politics.  He sees the writing on the wall.  I told him I get depressed as well.  Everyone does.  I think it is hardest though for white middle class folks who have tasted elements of the success mythology.  For them acknowledging the 'dream' is a manipulation comes hard.  Social control is strong in the human community.  Indigenous people, people of color and the multi-generational poor have long been singing the blues.  Time for white folks to learn the blues.

DANGEROUS NATO EXPANSION

Rick Rozoff, internationally recognized critic of NATO, spoke on April 12, 2014 at a Chicago teach-in titled "Stop U.S./NATO's New Cold War Over Ukraine."

He described the geo-political background to the current crisis resulting from the recent right-wing coup of the Kiev government in Ukraine and U.S./NATO sable-rattling. The key to understanding the present situation is to look at the historically aggressive objectives of NATO.

"The Ukrainian crisis is simply the pretext for the U.S. and its NATO allies of moving more military equipment up to the Russian border...to besiege (it). And there's only one reason you besiege a country -- either to starve it out or to attack it. And nothing less severe is at stake right now."

Rozoff also noted the presence of the warship USS Donald Cook in the Black Sea -- and which has as of this writing been reported on corporate media, with cued vexation, as having been buzzed by a Russian fighter jet. "It's the third guided missile warship from the United States to go into the Black Sea since the crisis in the Ukraine. There is a convention in 1936 called the Montreux Convention that expressly prohibits war ships of a certain size or larger to go into the Black Sea or to stay there over a limited period of time. The U.S. is in clear violation of that Convention and Russian political figures have notified them of that."

"There is no way of exaggerating the severity of what we're facing right now." Rozoff warns. "I applaud everyone's efforts in building an anti-war movement. It has never been more necessary than it is right now."

Important Update: After receiving this video link from my friend Rick in Chicago he wrote me the following.....

Thanks, Bruce.
As I was speaking some 50 Ukrainian-American extremists began attacking the building we were in, pounding on the glass doors and trying to assualt all of us inside. They had to be dispersed by the police.
Maidan Square-type violence on the streets of Chicago.

MAKING THE DEADLY CONNECTIONS IN TORONTO

I am at the airport in Toronto and it is snowing outside.  The previous two days here it was quite warm.

I began my talk last night at the University of Toronto by saying that everywhere I go these days people talk about how their weather is messed up.  The corporate war on the planet is being felt.

I spoke along with Richard Sanders who works for the Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade in Ottawa.  His talk was about the myths that exist inside the Canadian peace movement about their country. Instead of being the neutral peacekeepers they like to pretend to be, Canada has been a loyal NATO 'partner' along with the US in the attacks and occupations of Iraq, Afghanistan and more.  Canada played a key military role in the ouster of the democratically elected Aristide government in Haiti.

He also showed how some "progressive NGO's" in Canada get money from the government and then promote the "responsibility to protect" (R2P) mantra that is increasingly used by US-NATO to justify military intervention and occupation.

Sanders also reported on Canada's growing role as 'partner' in US weapons manufacturing as they make many of the high-tech parts for the Pentagon's war machine, including military space systems.

In my talk I reminded the audience that Canada has appropriated $25 billion for building new warships (the largest military appropriation in Canadian history).  These armed combat vessels, being built at the Irving shipyard in Halifax, Nova Scotia (with the help of Lockheed Martin), will be used in the Arctic as the US-NATO juggernaut challenges Russia for dominance in that region.

At the end of March Maine's Sen. Angus King (Independent) took a ride on a US Navy nuclear submarine under the melting Arctic ice.  King reported that 40% of the ice in the Arctic has already melted away and that this accelerating process will allow the extraction of oil and natural gas by the fossil fuel corporations.

Also on that same sub ride was New York Times colmnist Thomas Friedman who later reported that Admiral Jonathan Greenert, the chief of naval operations, told him, "We need to be sure that our sensors, weapons and people are proficient in this part of the world," so that we can "own the undersea domain and get anywhere there."

What they wish to "own" includes 90 billion barrels of oil, 1,669 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 44 billion barrels of natural gas liquids.  This is all spelled out in a new document called the "US Navy Arctic Roadmap: 2014-2030".

In other words the Pentagon has a plan to serve as the primary resource extraction service for corporate globalization.  And if that means even more conflict with Russia (which has the largest Arctic border) then so be it.

So as we are connecting the dots between growing militarism and climate change the whole Arctic zone issue should now be included in the equation.

US WANTS TO CREATE CHAOS ALONG RUSSIAN BORDERS

A top Obama admin official says Washington is considering arming Ukrainian govt forces. RT's Gayane Chichakyan has the details. To find out more about this development, Nebojsa Malic a foreign affairs expert and historian joins us live.

Can't ask it often enough - what if Russia was arming people on our Canadian or Mexican borders?
